A quiet afternoon at a popular Durango skate park turned into a crime scene Tuesday after a verbal fight between two men ended in gunfire. Police say a 42-year-old local pulled a handgun and fired three shots at an Arizona visitor, who later died at the hospital. Drones, witnesses and fast-moving officers all played a role in what unfolded next.
What Happened at Schneider Skate Park
On May 5, 2026, at approximately 1:17 p.m., Durango Police Department officers responded to a report of shots fired and one person shot at Schneider Skate Park, located at 950 Roosa Ave.
The incident began as an altercation between two males. Based on the investigation, one of the males, identified as Chad Alexander Blechinger, 42, of Durango, Colorado, produced a handgun. Blechinger then shot the other man three times as the dispute spiraled out of control.
The victim was identified as Noah Roe, 29, of Bullhead City, Arizona. Investigators have not publicly shared what the two men were arguing about.
Drones Hit the Sky Before Officers Arrived
Durango police credit their new airborne tools for getting eyes on the scene almost instantly. The first 911 call was received at 1:17:40 p.m. At 1:19:29 p.m., the Durango Police Department’s first Drone as a First Responder was launched. The drone operator saw the call on the CAD screen before it was aired and began the launch process. Within seconds, the drone was overhead and able to provide an initial view of the scene.
A second drone was launched at 1:20:02 p.m., giving officers a real-time view of the park as they raced toward Roosa Avenue.
Video captured by the drones showed Blechinger lay on the ground and surrender to police as they arrived. Police took him into custody without resistance.
Self-Defense Claim and a Gun in a Pickup Truck
According to the arrest affidavit, Blechinger did not try to hide what happened. After shooting Roe, Blechinger allegedly placed the gun into the back of a red Dodge pickup truck parked at the skate park. He was reportedly heard saying he had shot Roe in self-defense and requested a lawyer.
He now faces a serious charge. Chad Blechinger, 42, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, according to court records cited by local outlets.

Bystanders Stepped In to Save a Stranger
While officers were still en route, regular people at the park did not freeze. The drone video also shows community members providing aid to Roe before officers arrived. One officer immediately transitioned to providing medical aid to Roe while other officers secured Blechinger and moved him to a patrol vehicle.
At 1:27 p.m., Durango Fire Protection District arrived and loaded the victim into an ambulance. At 1:36 p.m. he was taken to Mercy Hospital. Doctors rushed him into surgery, but his injuries were too severe.
Roe died of his wounds Tuesday evening.

Police Push Back Against Gun Violence
The Durango Police Department used the moment to send a clear message to the public. “We also want to recognize the community members who immediately stepped in to help Roe,” the release said. “Their actions showed courage, compassion and care during an incredibly difficult moment.”
The department also leaned hard on the wider issue. “Acts of violence have a lasting impact on our community,” the release said. “Disagreements, anger and conflict can never justify taking a life. Our community deserves public spaces where families, residents, and visitors feel safe.”
Several agencies joined the response. The police department also thanked La Plata County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado State Patrol, Durango Emergency Communications Center, Durango Fire and Rescue, Colorado Bureau of Investigation and CommonSpirit Health Mercy Hospital staff for their assistance.

For now, a young man from Arizona is gone, a Durango father figure to his neighborhood sits in a jail cell, and a skate park where kids learn kickflips is wrapped in police tape. Tuesday’s shooting has shaken a small mountain town that prides itself on safety, and the grief is real for everyone who knew Noah Roe.
