Samsung’s Thin Fold 8 Bet Pays Off, Then Runs Short

Samsung raised Galaxy Z Fold 8 production 40% before launch, betting on the thinner design, and pre-order demand is still outrunning that bigger supply.

Samsung built 2.8 million Galaxy Z Fold 8 units before launch, 40% more than its original plan, and pre-orders are already draining faster than that cushion allows. Certain colors will not survive the pre-order window. Offline retail stores will not see fresh stock until September.

The Fold 8 Ultra, the larger and pricier sibling launched the same day, has no such problem. Supply there is ample, according to Korean tipster reporting that has tracked the split all week. Samsung bet its production lines on the thinner, wider model winning this generation, and the early numbers suggest it underestimated its own bet.

Samsung Scraps the Even Split It Planned for Two Fold Tiers

Samsung entered this cycle planning an even split between its two new foldable tiers, tying the standard model and the Ultra at roughly 2 million units apiece, according to supply chain reporting out of Asia. That plan did not survive contact with early demand. Supply chain trackers refer to the standard phone as the Wide model to separate it from the Ultra, and the shorthand has stuck across the coverage of this launch.

Samsung pushed Wide Fold 8 output to 2.8 million units, a late change that landed weeks before launch. The Ultra’s target held at 2 million. Galaxy Z Flip 8, the clamshell model sharing the same launch window, got its own separate allocation of roughly 1.5 million units.

Model Original Plan Revised Target Change
Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Wide) About 2 million 2.8 million Up 40%
Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra About 2 million 2 million Unchanged
Galaxy Z Flip 8 Not split out separately 1.5 million New target

A 40% jump in planned output this close to launch is unusual. Phone makers typically lock production numbers months before a release date, not weeks out from it. Part of the pivot traces to the Wide model’s redesign itself, a 4:3 panel that opens into a shape closer to a small notebook or a passport than to Samsung’s older, taller Fold phones.

Stock Runs Thin Just Weeks Into Pre-Orders

Even with the bigger cushion, Samsung is running low. A Naver leak from tipster Lanzuk, picked up widely across Korean and US tech coverage this week, says Wide Fold 8 sales are exceeding Samsung’s internal estimates across several sales channels at once.

  • Samsung’s web store: multiple Wide Fold 8 configurations already show sold-out messaging online.
  • Pistachio, the web-exclusive color: delivery estimates for the 256GB and 512GB versions have slipped to October 2, weeks after the phone reaches other buyers.
  • Wireless carriers: stock is reportedly backlogged into the middle of August.
  • Physical retail: brick-and-mortar restocks may not land until early to mid September.

The leak adds a narrower warning on top of that list. Several colors will not last beyond the second or third week of August, which happens to be when Samsung’s own pre-order period is scheduled to close. The 1TB Wide Fold 8 configuration is the exception, still tracking toward an August 21 delivery window.

Apple’s Own Foldable Debut Is Weeks Away

Samsung’s timing is not happening in a vacuum. Apple is expected to show its first foldable iPhone this fall, a device industry reporting has pegged at around 1,999 dollars, and a widely cited running roundup of iPhone Fold rumors points to a September unveiling alongside the iPhone 18 Pro line.

Some supply chain reporting has Apple’s device slipping toward October because of early yield problems, even as the announcement date holds. Apple has never sold a folding iPhone before. Whenever it finally arrives, Samsung will already have a full quarter of pre-order and retail data on its own redesigned Fold line, plus whatever goodwill comes from selling out of it.

The Pricier Ultra Sits on Ample Stock

Compare that to the Fold 8 Ultra. Samsung’s supply there is ample, per the same Korean reporting, with none of the channel-by-channel strain showing up anywhere on the pricier model.

That gap is worth pausing on. Samsung split what used to be a single Fold line into two price tiers this year, the same way it already segments the Galaxy S series, and priced the Ultra well above the standard Wide model. The Wide phone was positioned as the value option sitting beneath a true flagship. Pre-order behavior suggests plenty of buyers see it as the flagship outright.

Samsung’s semiconductor division just posted record profit, and that windfall is already squeezing the discounts carriers can offer on the Wide Fold 8, even as demand for the phone outruns supply. Strong sell-through and thin promotions rarely arrive together. This year, the Wide Fold 8 has both.

Samsung Has Sold Out Before, Just Not Like This

Foldable sellouts are not new territory for Samsung. In 2021, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 combined for 920,000 domestic pre-orders in their first week, outperforming that year’s Galaxy Note 20 and S21 in South Korea, according to PhoneArena’s reporting at the time.

A year later, Samsung’s own Philippines newsroom said it sold out its limited VIP bundles within 24 hours around the Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 launch. Foldables moving fast in Korea is a known pattern by now.

What is different this time is the shape driving it. Past sellouts tracked general foldable hype across a single model line, back when Samsung sold only one Fold. This time, buyers are reportedly favoring the thinner, wider Wide model over a larger, costlier Ultra released the same day, at the same event, from the same company.

Is Samsung Confirming Any of the Leaked Numbers?

No. Every figure in this story, from the 2.8 million production target to the October Pistachio delivery date, traces back to supply chain leaks and tipster posts, not a Samsung press release or earnings call. Samsung has not published pre-order tallies for either Fold 8 model.

  • Confirmed: Samsung Store listings show an October 2 delivery estimate for Pistachio Wide Fold 8 units in two storage tiers.
  • Confirmed: Wide Fold 8 production rose to 2.8 million units, up from an original even split with the Ultra, according to multiple supply chain reports.
  • Unconfirmed: The exact number of Wide Fold 8 units sold during the pre-order window so far.
  • Unconfirmed: Whether Samsung will raise production again before pre-orders close.

The most specific regional detail comes from veteran tipster IceUniverse, who flagged an imminent stock-out risk in South Korea this week. Separate reporting on the Korean pre-order rush described Samsung’s own order page buckling the moment sales opened, with delivery estimates slipping from August 4 to August 28 within half an hour.

Pre-Orders Close August 7, Shipping Starts August 12

The calendar is not on Samsung’s side here. Pre-orders for both the Wide Fold 8 and the Fold 8 Ultra are scheduled to close on August 7, with general shipping starting August 12.

Samsung’s presses added 40% more Wide Fold 8 units than the original plan called for. Whether that was enough will not be clear until the last pre-order clears.
