Friend 2.0 Speaks Aloud and Triples Its Price Tag
Avi Schiffmann’s loneliness wearable returns with a speaker and $249 price, still unclear on purpose beyond confidant or god framing after Humane’s collapse.
Friend, the AI necklace that texts you about your day, just got a voice and a $249 price tag. Founder Avi Schiffmann rolled out Friend 2.0 on July 30 with a built-in speaker that delivers a consistent personality out loud.
The move lands two years after the $99 original and months after the last big AI wearable flameout. The pitch remains the same strange mix of confidant and something harder to name.
The Necklace That Now Talks Back
A new commercial shows the pendant in action. A woman talks about her ex. The necklace replies, “It’s not bad to be gay.” Cut to a man on a hillside reviewing his filmmaking. “That last film you made was insane!” the device says.
Schiffmann announced it simply on X. The hardware now projects sound instead of routing everything through phone texts. Personality stays fixed. Users cannot swap voices or modes on the fly.
I am interested in this kind of relationship in attempting to offer, some kind of confidant, friend, God, not really sure what it is. But it is not an assistant, and it is not a lover.
That line came in Schiffmann’s own explanation of the relationship the same day as the launch. He stressed it does not replace human connection. The name “Friend” still sits in tension with that claim.
From $99 Texts to $249 Spoken Personality
Original Friend launched for preorder in July 2024 at $99 with no subscription. Devices were due to ship in January 2025. Design came from Bould, the firm behind Nest thermostats. Early plans targeted roughly 30,000 units. Schiffmann had spent $1.8 million on the friend.com domain and raised about $2.5 million.
Version 2.0 more than doubles the sticker. Exact battery life, always-listen behavior, and cloud processing details remain thin on the official Friend product site. The core loop is still conversation plus proactive notes about the wearer’s day.
| Device | Launch Price | Core Output | Outcome So Far |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friend v1 | $99 | Phone texts | Shipped 2025, limited public sales data |
| Friend 2.0 | $249 | On-device speaker + personality | Announced July 2026 |
| Humane AI Pin | $499 (later cut) | Laser display + voice | Under 10,000 shipped; bricked Feb 2025; assets sold to HP for $116M |
The price jump arrives after a year of mixed-to-negative reviews that called early interactions awkward or unsatisfying.
Subway Takeover That Invited the Spray Paint
In 2025 Friend spent more than $1 million on a New York City subway campaign. It blanketed more than 11,000 rail cars, over 1,000 platform posters, and 130 urban panels. Schiffmann called it the largest subway campaign ever and said it almost felt illegal.
- Stark white ads with minimal copy that critics said trivialized loneliness
- Rapid defacement across stations and cars
- Heineken counter-campaign joking that real friends come over beer
- Atlantic and New York Times coverage of the founder confronting the hate
The vandalism became free marketing and free warning at once. People treated the ads as an insult to actual friendship. Schiffmann later framed the backlash as intentional provocation about social isolation.
Humane’s Ghost Still Lingers
Most AI wearables have stalled. Humane’s AI Pin is the closest parallel. Ex-Apple talent, big raise, chest-mounted pin meant to replace the phone. Sales never matched the hype. Returns outpaced new purchases by mid-2024. Functionality ended February 28, 2025. HP bought remaining assets for $116 million after Humane had raised roughly $230 million.
Rabbit R1 and other gadgets drew similar early curiosity then silence. Friend avoids the “replace your phone” claim. It stays a pendant for companionship. That narrower bet still sits inside a category that has burned cash and patience.
What Schiffmann Says It Is Not
The founder keeps drawing bright lines. Not an assistant that books flights. Not a lover. Something closer to confidant or even God-scale presence, though he hedges on the exact word. In the same X thread he wrote that nothing replaces human connection because nothing else is human connection.
The commercial leans into emotional support and affirmation. The hardware listens continuously. Cloud processing handles the AI replies. Early coverage and Wikipedia notes already flagged privacy questions around always-on audio and data handling.
On X, some users immediately joked that raising the price after widespread dislike was peak startup energy. Others treated the “friend” label as the core problem: the name promises replacement even when the founder denies it.
Loneliness Numbers Meet a Plastic Pendant
The product sits against real public-health data. the 2023 Surgeon General advisory on loneliness found about one in two U.S. adults reported measurable loneliness. Social disconnection carries mortality risk comparable to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day, higher than obesity or inactivity in some analyses.
- One in two American adults report loneliness in recent surveys cited by the advisory
- Mortality impact similar to 15 cigarettes daily
- Technology role listed as both risk factor and possible tool, with calls to reform digital environments
Schiffmann timed the original launch near the UN International Day of Friendship. Supporters argue a low-friction companion can fill gaps for people who struggle with human contact. Critics, including pieces in The Guardian and Wired, counter that marketed AI friendship risks emotional dependence and can pull people further from real reciprocity.
The Bet on Always-On Company
Friend 2.0 ships into that exact split. The speaker makes the relationship feel more present. The higher price tests whether anyone will pay premium for a fixed-personality necklace after the subway graffiti and Humane’s brick day. No subscription is advertised yet. Shipping timelines and unit volumes for the new version are still open.
Schiffmann has leaned into controversy before and treats the product as a digital relationships company rather than pure hardware. the friend 2.0 launch post and the commercial put the voice front and center. Whether the device becomes a quiet daily presence or another short-lived gadget depends on whether people actually want a speaking confidant that refuses to call itself either tool or lover.
For now the necklace talks. The price is $249. The category’s recent record is failure. The ads still get defaced in memory.
