Car Plows Into Grand Junction Furniture Store, Alcohol Suspected in Late-Night Crash

A quiet Monday night along Highway 6 and 50 turned chaotic when a vehicle slammed into the front of Holman House Furniture, leaving the building damaged and the car’s occupants injured.

Impact Shakes Furniture Storefront

The crash happened around 9:40 p.m., when most of the surrounding businesses were already closed. The Grand Junction Police Department says the vehicle left the roadway and struck the store’s facade, shattering glass and damaging part of the building structure.

Inside the store, no employees or customers were present at the time, preventing what could have been a more serious incident. Police and fire crews responded within minutes, securing the scene and assessing the structural safety of the building.

Injuries to Car’s Occupants

Authorities confirmed that the individuals inside the vehicle sustained injuries in the crash. Their conditions have not yet been disclosed, but police say both were transported for medical evaluation.

Witnesses who arrived shortly after the crash described seeing airbags deployed and debris scattered across the parking lot. One nearby resident reported hearing “a loud boom, like something heavy being dropped,” before stepping outside to see emergency lights flashing.

Alcohol Considered a Factor

While the investigation is ongoing, the Grand Junction Police Department says alcohol is being looked at as a possible contributing factor. Officers at the scene reportedly conducted field assessments and collected evidence to determine whether impairment played a role.

Colorado law treats DUI-related crashes involving injuries and property damage as serious criminal matters. If confirmed, the driver could face charges ranging from DUI to vehicular assault.

Damage Assessment Underway

Holman House Furniture, a long-time fixture in Grand Junction’s retail landscape, now faces cleanup and repair before reopening the damaged section of the store. The building’s front windows and entryway took the brunt of the impact, though a full structural evaluation is still in progress.

Incidents like this often require:

  • Temporary shoring of damaged walls

  • Replacement of glass storefront panels

  • Safety inspections before public access resumes

The store has not yet announced whether it will remain partially open during repairs.

Highway 6 and 50 Safety Concerns

The stretch of Highway 6 and 50 where the crash occurred sees a mix of local and through traffic, including higher-speed travel even during off-peak hours. Area residents have raised concerns in the past about late-night speeding and impaired driving along the corridor.

According to Colorado Department of Transportation data, the corridor has averaged between 20 and 30 reported crashes annually in recent years, with a small percentage involving DUI-related charges.

Year Reported Crashes DUI-Related Crashes
2022 28 4
2023 25 3
2024 22 5

Local safety advocates say the latest incident highlights the ongoing need for enforcement and education campaigns aimed at reducing impaired driving.

Investigation Continues

Police are still piecing together the sequence of events leading up to the crash, including the driver’s speed, potential distractions, and whether any mechanical issues could have contributed. The results of toxicology tests could take days to return.

For now, GJPD is asking anyone who witnessed the incident or saw the vehicle before the crash to come forward. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses may also help reconstruct the moments before impact.

One Holman House Furniture employee, who came by the store Tuesday morning, said the damage was a shock: “You just don’t expect to see your workplace with a car sticking out of it.”
