Montrose, Colorado – Doctors at Montrose Regional Health issued an urgent wake-up call this week: colorectal cancer is no longer just an older person’s disease. It has become the leading cause of cancer death in men under 50 and the second deadliest in women the same age. With cases in younger adults climbing fast, health leaders say waiting until symptoms appear is no longer safe.
The disease is hitting people in their 30s and 40s harder than ever before, and early screening starting at age 45 can literally save your life.
Cases in Younger Adults Have Doubled in Some Groups
National data shows colorectal cancer diagnoses in adults under 55 now make up one in five new cases, up from one in ten just twenty years ago.
The American Cancer Society reports that people born in 1990 have double the risk of colon cancer and quadruple the risk of rectal cancer compared to those born in 1950.
In Colorado, the trend mirrors the nation. State health records show a steady increase in early-onset cases over the past decade, with rural areas like Montrose seeing the same disturbing pattern.
Dr. Vanessa Lee, gastroenterologist at Montrose Regional Health’s Digestive Health Center, sees the shift firsthand.
“I am diagnosing patients in their 30s and early 40s who have no family history and live healthy lives,” Dr. Lee said. “Many think this can’t happen to them because of their age. By the time they feel something is wrong, the cancer is often advanced.”
Early Detection Offers a 90% Survival Rate
The good news hides in plain sight: when caught early, colorectal cancer has one of the highest cure rates of any cancer.
“If we find it while it’s still in the colon or rectum, the five-year survival rate is over 90%,” Dr. Lee explained. “That drops to 73% if it spreads to nearby lymph nodes and falls to just 17% if it reaches distant organs.”
Screening finds precancerous polyps years before they turn dangerous. Removing them prevents cancer entirely.
That is why major health organizations lowered the recommended screening age from 50 to 45 in recent years.
Simple Screening Options Available Right Now
Most people dread the word “colonoscopy,” but options have improved dramatically.
Here are the main screening methods doctors recommend today:
- Colonoscopy (gold standard) – every 10 years
- Stool-based tests (FIT or Cologuard) – every 1-3 years
- Virtual colonoscopy (CT colonography) – every 5 years
- Flexible sigmoidoscopy – every 5 years
“The stool tests are easy, done at home, and very accurate at finding cancer,” Dr. Lee said. “Positive results simply mean you need a colonoscopy to look closer. Most people never need that follow-up.”
Montrose Regional Health makes starting simple. Patients can talk to their primary care doctor or call the Digestive Health Center directly for screening recommendations.
Lifestyle Changes That Actually Lower Risk
While some risk factors like family history cannot change, many everyday choices make a real difference:
- Eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
- Cut back on red and processed meats
- Exercise regularly (even walking 30 minutes most days helps)
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Limit alcohol and quit smoking
“Small changes add up to big protection,” Dr. Lee said. “I have patients who made these changes after a scare and now have completely clean screenings year after year.”
The message from Montrose doctors is clear and urgent: this disease is preventable, treatable, and beatable when caught early.
No one wants to think about colorectal cancer in their 40s. But ignoring the new reality puts lives at risk.
Talk to your doctor this month. Schedule that screening. Your future self, and the people who love you, will be forever grateful.
