Three suspects are now in custody after Mesa County Sheriff’s deputies recovered two stolen firearms and seized ammunition during separate law enforcement operations this week. The arrests, spanning just over 24 hours, highlight an ongoing crackdown on illegal weapons across the western Colorado community.
Traffic Stop Leads to First Gun Recovery
Isaiah Eastman was taken into custody Monday night in Clifton following a routine traffic stop that turned into a major weapons discovery. Deputies pulled over Eastman’s vehicle, and a K-9 unit was deployed to conduct a search of the car.
The police dog alerted officers to a concealed stolen firearm along with multiple boxes of ammunition. Eastman was arrested on the spot and faces gun-related charges as the investigation continues.
Law enforcement officials have not disclosed what initially prompted the traffic stop or whether Eastman has prior criminal history related to weapons offenses.
Suspect Flees Before Taser Deployment
The second arrest unfolded Tuesday when deputies attempted to question occupants of another vehicle. Mikel Smith, who was riding as a passenger, immediately fled on foot when officers approached the car.
Deputies pursued Smith through the area before deploying a taser to subdue him. After the arrest, officers discovered Smith was carrying a firearm and had multiple outstanding warrants already issued against him.
The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office has not released details about the nature of Smith’s warrants or whether the gun he possessed was reported stolen. Smith now faces additional charges stemming from the incident, including potential counts for evading arrest and illegal firearm possession.
Sleeping Driver Found With Stolen Weapon
Approximately one hour after Smith’s arrest, deputies encountered a third suspect in what appears to be an unrelated incident. Officers found Keaton Kurtz unconscious behind the wheel of a vehicle near the intersection of 32 and Three Eighths Road.
Authorities suspect Kurtz may have been driving under the influence of alcohol at the time. After rousing him and conducting field sobriety assessments, deputies searched his vehicle.
Inside, they discovered another stolen firearm. Kurtz was arrested and is expected to face charges that could include DUI along with illegal possession of a stolen weapon.
The sheriff’s office has not confirmed whether either of the recovered stolen guns had been used in previous crimes or how long they had been missing from their rightful owners.
What This Means for Mesa County
The three arrests within such a compressed timeframe underscore both the prevalence of illegal firearms in Mesa County and the dedication of local law enforcement to removing them from circulation. Stolen guns pose a significant public safety risk, as they are frequently used in subsequent crimes and are nearly impossible to trace back to the person wielding them.
Mesa County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate all three cases. Authorities encourage anyone with information about illegal firearms or stolen weapons to contact local law enforcement immediately.
These incidents serve as a reminder that routine traffic stops and vigilant patrol work remain critical tools in combating gun crime across Colorado communities. As the legal proceedings move forward, prosecutors will determine the full range of charges each suspect will face in court.
As Mesa County works to address gun violence and illegal weapons possession, these arrests represent important steps toward community safety.
