Catholic Charities, EnglishConnect Launch Refugee ESL Program in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend has joined forces with EnglishConnect to provide free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for refugees in the Fort Wayne area. The initiative aims to enhance language skills, helping new arrivals integrate into the community and achieve economic stability.

Weekly Classes to Support Refugees

The ESL classes will be held weekly at Autumn Woods Apartments, located at 1941 Chartwell Drive. The sessions, led by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will take place every Monday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.. However, in observance of Ramadan, class times will shift slightly to 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. during the holy month.

Catholic Charities emphasized that English proficiency is key to successful resettlement. “Mastering English is crucial for our clients to integrate into the community,” said Nyein Chan, Director of Refugee Services at Catholic Charities. “With the right tools, they can connect with neighbors, embrace the culture, and secure employment.”

A Broader Mission for Integration

The partnership with EnglishConnect, a global initiative of the LDS Church, aligns with Catholic Charities’ broader Refugee Resettlement Program, which focuses on two primary objectives:

  • Economic self-sufficiency – Helping refugees secure jobs and financial stability.
  • Community integration – Encouraging social connections and cultural adaptation.

David S. Kinard, of the LDS Church’s Indiana Indianapolis Coordinating Council, highlighted the global success of EnglishConnect. “More than 100,000 learners from over 100 countries have benefited from this program,” he said. “We’re excited about this partnership and what it means for the Fort Wayne refugee community.”

Why English Proficiency Matters

For many refugees, language barriers are among the biggest challenges in adapting to life in the United States. Without English fluency, everyday tasks such as grocery shopping, filling out paperwork, or speaking with doctors become overwhelming.

  • Employment: English proficiency opens doors to better job opportunities.
  • Education: Parents can better support their children in school.
  • Community Connection: Stronger communication leads to better relationships with neighbors and local services.

This collaboration between Catholic Charities and EnglishConnect offers a crucial stepping stone for refugees striving to build a new life in Fort Wayne. As the program continues, organizers hope to expand services and reach even more individuals in need of language support.
