One Dead in Christmas Day Fire in Jay County
JAY COUNTY, Ind. – A tragic Christmas Day fire in Jay County has resulted in one death. The Portland Fire Department responded to the blaze early on December 25, 2024, around 4:45 a.m., deploying three fire trucks and 15 firefighters to the scene. They also called for support from the Bryant Volunteer Fire Department.
Firefighters’ Efforts and Discovery
Upon arriving, fire crews initiated an interior attack and conducted a search of the structure. During the search, they discovered an individual who was later confirmed to be deceased. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Investigation Underway
The Portland Fire Department, along with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security State Fire Marshal, Portland Police Department, Jay County Sheriff’s Office, Jay County EMS, and the Jay County Coroner’s Office, is working to determine the cause of the fire. The investigation remains ongoing.
