Fort Wayne Invites Public to Help Shape Waynedale’s Future Through 2040 Strategic Visioning
The City of Fort Wayne has launched a major new initiative to shape the future of its historic Waynedale neighborhood, and it’s calling on residents to help define that vision.
Dubbed the Waynedale 2040 Plan, the ten-year strategic framework will serve as a guiding document for public investment, infrastructure priorities, and community-driven development through the middle of the next decade. The effort is one of the city’s most comprehensive neighborhood planning initiatives in years, touching on everything from housing and economic revitalization to parks, transportation, and even marketing.
Broad Scope, Local Focus
According to city officials, the Waynedale 2040 Plan aims to create a holistic, actionable vision for the neighborhood, drawing on resident feedback and data-driven planning to shape how resources are allocated and programs implemented.
The plan is expected to tackle a wide array of pressing and long-term priorities:
-
Historic preservation
-
Economic development
-
Affordable and diverse housing
-
Public infrastructure and utilities
-
Zoning and land use modernization
-
Green space and recreation access
-
Transit and mobility enhancements
-
Public safety and emergency readiness
-
Neighborhood connectivity and walkability
-
Community branding and outreach
City planners describe it as a blueprint that will align public and private investment with community priorities, ensuring Waynedale’s identity is preserved even as it adapts to future growth and challenges.
Community Events: Where and When
To ensure local voices are heard, Fort Wayne will host four public engagement sessions in June and July. Each event will offer residents an opportunity to speak directly with planners, provide ideas, and explore proposed goals for the plan’s development.
Schedule of Public Visioning Events:
| Date | Time | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Monday, June 9 | 5 – 8 p.m. | Waynedale Park Shelter, 2900 Koonz Street |
| Wednesday, June 11 | 4 – 7 p.m. | Psi Ote Park Shelter, 3500 Wenonah Lane |
| Thursday, July 10 | 5 – 8 p.m. | The Stand, 5200 Bluffton Road |
| Thursday, July 24 | 5 – 8 p.m. | Willow Creek Crossing Clubhouse, 7501 Lakeridge Drive |
City leaders emphasized that all events are free and open to the public, and no registration is required.
Why Now?
The Waynedale 2040 Plan comes at a time of significant transition for Fort Wayne’s south side, with new development pressure, aging infrastructure, and shifting demographics all playing a role. Officials believe a forward-thinking strategy will be key to ensuring the neighborhood remains vibrant and inclusive.
“This is about listening to the people who live, work, and raise their families here,” a city spokesperson said. “We want to understand what matters to them — not just today, but in 10 or 15 years.”
The plan is being developed in collaboration with local stakeholders and planning professionals, and it is slated for completion by mid-2026.
Strategic Planning as Civic Engagement
The move aligns Fort Wayne with a broader trend of cities embracing participatory planning models that emphasize local input over top-down decision-making. Experts say such efforts often yield more durable, community-supported policies and help avoid costly course corrections later.
“These are the kinds of plans that shape neighborhoods for a generation,” said one local planner not affiliated with the project. “It’s encouraging to see Fort Wayne taking a deliberate and inclusive approach.”
The city is also expected to release digital engagement tools later this year, allowing residents to submit feedback online for those unable to attend in person.
