8-Year-Old Girl Rescues Elderly Woman After Icy Fall in Indiana

An 8-year-old girl from Garrett, Indiana, turned into a real-life hero when she heard an elderly woman calling for help while shoveling snow. What followed was an act of kindness that created an unexpected friendship.

A Cry for Help in the Cold

Debby Lytle had stepped outside to do her laundry when disaster struck. The cold pavement was unforgiving, and she slipped, falling hard onto the ice.

“I was crying and crying, and my tears were starting to freeze,” Debby recalled. “My hands were so cold, and I just couldn’t get up.”

For an hour, she remained stranded, hoping someone would hear her. Then, her luck changed.

The Young Rescuer Steps In

Kymber Northrup, an 8-year-old girl from Garrett, was outside shoveling snow when she heard a faint voice calling for help. She didn’t hesitate.

“I told her to hold on and ran inside to grab my mom,” Kymber said.

Together, Kymber and her mother, Lisa Messer, helped Debby back to her home. But Kymber wasn’t finished helping just yet.

  • She made sure Debby was safe inside.
  • She and her mom sprinkled salt on Debby’s sidewalk to prevent further falls.
  • She visited Debby multiple times afterward to check on her.

A Friendship is Born

The fall left Debby with a sore leg, but thanks to Kymber’s kindness, she wasn’t alone in her recovery. The young girl made sure to check in on Debby several times a day.

“She’s my little savior,” Debby said. “We didn’t know each other before, but we sure do now.”

Kymber even took it upon herself to make sure Debby wasn’t overexerting herself. “She said, ‘No laundry today! I’ll come do your laundry,'” Lisa Messer recounted with a proud chuckle.

An Unlikely Bond

Sometimes, friendships form in the most unexpected ways. This was certainly true for Debby and Kymber, who now share a special bond.

“Are we going to be friends?” Kymber was asked.

“Probably, mhm,” she responded with a shy smile.

Debby, however, had no doubts. “Oh yeah, yes, yes, yes. I need another grandkid!” she said warmly.

What started as a simple act of kindness turned into a heartwarming friendship—one built on compassion, bravery, and a little bit of fate.
