Carroll High School Marching Band Welcomes German Exchange Student

The Carroll High School marching band recently embraced a unique opportunity by welcoming German foreign exchange student Karoline Fenselau into their ensemble. With only a few weeks of practice under her belt, Fenselau made her debut performance at the 2024 Super Regional held at Lucas Oil Stadium last weekend, showcasing the spirit of camaraderie and cultural exchange.

A New Journey Begins

Karoline Fenselau arrived in Fort Wayne through a student exchange program, bringing with her a sense of curiosity and a desire to experience American culture. Although she had heard of marching bands before, she had no prior experience. Initially, she took on the role of prop manager, but it didn’t take long for her to realize that she wanted to be more actively involved in the band.

“I heard of marching band before, but never really knew what it was,” Fenselau shared, reflecting on her initial impressions. Her enthusiasm and determination quickly caught the attention of her fellow band members, who rallied around her to help her transition into a full-fledged member of the ensemble.

  • Key moments in Fenselau’s journey include:
    • Starting as a prop manager before deciding to join the band.
    • Support from friends and bandmates who encouraged her to participate.
    • A rapid learning curve that allowed her to perform at a major competition.

The Power of Community and Support

Band Director Doug Hassell emphasized the importance of experiences like Fenselau’s, stating, “Those are the kind of rewards that you live for, and you never forget. In a word, it’s fulfilling; you kind of sit back and smile.” His words highlight the value of community and the impact that supportive relationships can have on personal growth.

Fenselau’s journey is a testament to the power of teamwork and friendship. With the encouragement of her bandmates, she quickly adapted to the demands of marching band, learning routines and music in a short period. The bonds she formed with her fellow musicians have made her time in Fort Wayne even more meaningful.

  • Fenselau expressed her gratitude, saying:
    • “It means a lot to me, and all these people I met here mean a lot to me.”
    • She acknowledged the emotional weight of her upcoming departure, stating, “I am going to miss them really much when I am going back to Germany.”

A Memorable Performance

Fenselau’s debut at the Super Regional was not just a personal achievement; it was a celebration of cultural exchange and the spirit of inclusivity that defines the Carroll High School marching band. Her performance served as a reminder of the joy that comes from embracing new experiences and the friendships that can blossom from them.

As Fenselau continues her journey in Fort Wayne, she leaves a lasting impression on her peers and the community. Her story exemplifies the enriching experiences that come from stepping outside one’s comfort zone and the importance of welcoming diverse perspectives into our lives.
