Colorado Parks and Wildlife Announces Boating Season Opening Dates

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has released the official opening dates for boating at six state parks, signaling the start of the 2025 boating season. With ice conditions still affecting some areas, CPW urges boaters to stay updated and prepare accordingly.

Official Opening Dates for State Parks

Several state parks have confirmed their opening schedules, while others remain dependent on ice conditions. Here’s the latest update from CPW:

  • Barr Lake: April 1 at 8 a.m.
  • Boyd Lake: March 10 at 8 a.m.
  • Cherry Creek: March 10 at 8 a.m.

Ice Conditions and Safety Concerns

CPW has emphasized that some lakes and reservoirs are still covered in ice, delaying certain openings. Eleven Mile and Spinney Mountain reservoirs will remain closed until conditions allow for safe navigation. Officials warn that early-season boating comes with risks, including cold water temperatures and shifting ice.

“We want to ensure that all boaters have a safe experience on the water,” CPW officials stated. “Checking ice conditions and weather forecasts before heading out is critical.”

Registration and Aquatic Nuisance Species Stamp

Boaters are reminded to complete all necessary registrations before launching. CPW requires vessels to be properly registered and have an Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) stamp to help prevent the spread of invasive species.

  • Boat registrations can be renewed online or at designated CPW offices.
  • The ANS stamp is mandatory for all motorized and sail-powered boats.
  • Inspections for invasive species may be required before launching at certain locations.

Preparing for the Boating Season

As the season begins, CPW encourages boaters to take extra precautions:

  • Wear life jackets – Cold water can be dangerous, even for experienced swimmers.
  • Check weather conditions – Sudden storms and wind shifts are common in Colorado.
  • Inspect equipment – Ensure boats and safety gear are in good working order.
  • Follow regulations – Each park may have specific rules regarding speed limits, wake zones, and hours of operation.

With boating season now underway in several parks, outdoor enthusiasts can look forward to enjoying Colorado’s scenic lakes and reservoirs. However, staying informed and following regulations will be key to a safe and enjoyable experience on the water.
