Former School Bus Driver Arrested for Driving Intoxicated with Students Onboard

LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA) — A former school bus driver for the LaPorte Community School Corporation has been arrested and charged after allegedly driving under the influence with students aboard her bus earlier this year.

Kayla Pier, 38, of Michigan City, faces charges of operating while intoxicated and neglect of a dependent following a months-long investigation by the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred on September 20, when Pier was transporting 32 students from LaPorte Middle School to Riley Elementary School.

Students Alert Authorities

The students aboard the bus noticed erratic driving behavior and reported Pier’s suspicious actions to school officials. Upon arrival at Riley Elementary, Pier was removed from the bus, and she resigned from her position later that day.

Following the incident, school officials submitted a toxicology report to the sheriff’s office, which prompted the investigation that began in late October.

Investigation and Arrest

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office issued an arrest warrant for Pier after the investigation concluded last week. Pier turned herself in on Friday, was booked into the LaPorte County Jail, and was later released on bond.

Captain Derek Allen of the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office commended the students’ quick actions. “Their attention to detail and prompt actions may have prevented a tragedy from occurring,” he said. He also thanked the school administrators for their cooperation throughout the investigation, underscoring the importance of student safety.
