Bitey-Bitey Man: The Story of “Gero,” the Fallen K9 Hero
In the world of law enforcement, heroes come in all shapes and sizes — including four-legged partners. “Gero,” a K9 known as Bitey-Bitey Man, wasn’t just a dog; he was a brave, loyal teammate whose sacrifice saved lives and left an indelible mark on those who knew him.
A Rocky Start That Blossomed Into Unbreakable Trust
Back in February 2002, Officer Geraldine Earthman was handed Gero, her third K9 partner. The beginning? Let’s just say it was a bit rough. “I didn’t like him, and he didn’t like me,” Earthman recalls. The bond was tested from day one when Gero bit her during a tussle in the police department parking lot. They wrestled for dominance — “alpha of the team” was on the line — and, as Earthman jokes, she came out on top.
But that initial clash turned into a deep partnership. They caught countless bad guys and hauled in drugs, but when the day was done, Gero was family. “No matter what happened, I could count on him,” Earthman says. “And I did. He was there for me, even on that day.”
A Day That Changed Everything
May 6, 2004, is a date etched in Earthman’s memory forever. Called to assist another officer in apprehending a suspect with an outstanding warrant, the scene turned violent. The suspect pulled a gun on Earthman, but Gero immediately shifted the danger toward himself. Eleven shots rang out.
Gero was hit.
Earthman survived — because Gero took the bullets meant for her.
“I’m alive today because he is not,” she says simply. It’s a gut-punching reality that carries the weight of heroism and heartbreak in one.
Legacy of Loyalty and Community Support
The aftermath was bittersweet. One of the worst days in Earthman’s life also brought her some of her strongest memories — the unwavering support of the police department and the community rallying around them.
To keep Gero’s memory alive, Earthman got a tattoo of his paw print on her leg — a permanent mark of the bond they shared. Every year, she commemorates the anniversary of his sacrifice, sharing photos and stories so that his spirit stays alive.
Gero’s name now rests on the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C., joining the ranks of heroes recognized for their ultimate sacrifice.
“He was part of the department. Part of the Blue family,” Earthman stresses. “They should be honored just like any other member of the force.”
A Lesson in Courage and Survival
Gero’s story isn’t just about loss — it’s about the lessons he left behind. Earthman continues to work with dogs daily, carrying forward the knowledge and strength he instilled in her.
“I miss Bitey-Bitey Man. Every day. His craziness, his loyalty… but he taught me so much,” Earthman says. “He kept me alive that night and showed me how to survive throughout the rest of my career.”
This tale of grit and devotion reminds us all how vital the bond between handler and K9 is — and why these four-legged officers deserve to be remembered, honored, and celebrated for their fearless service.
