Boy Scout Troop 303 Holds Annual Christmas Tree Sale to Fund Summer Activities

For over 30 years, the holiday season in Grand Junction has been marked by a special tradition—Troop 303 of the Boy Scouts of America selling Christmas trees to fund the troop’s summer activities. This year’s sale, which kicks off this Friday, continues a legacy that helps young scouts participate in camping trips, buy new gear, and more.

A Tradition of Service and Fundraising

Every year, Boy Scouts in Troop 303 come together to sell Christmas trees as a way to raise money for their summer camping fund. The fundraiser is an essential part of their program, helping to keep the costs of outdoor adventures affordable for the scouts.

Scout Master Sherry Verdieck explains how the fundraiser works. “The boys that work hours at the tree lot are able to translate that into money toward their summer camp fund,” she says. They are paid based on how many hours they work at the lot, and the money is deposited into their individual accounts.

“This allows them to build up money for summer camp or to purchase equipment they may need for camping and other outdoor activities,” Verdieck adds. The funds raised are not just for fun—they provide opportunities for scouts to develop skills and bonds with each other, all while enjoying the great outdoors.

Cian Ornelas Shares His Experience

For Cian Ornelas, the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader of Troop 303, the Christmas tree sale isn’t just a fundraiser—it’s a chance to get hands-on experience. “It’s really fun. It really helps you get to interact with people and get to drill trees and all that just behind it. It’s really fun,” Ornelas shares.

The excitement is palpable among the scouts, who gain not just money for their camp fund but also valuable lessons in teamwork, leadership, and responsibility as they manage the tree lot. The event brings the community together while allowing the boys to contribute in meaningful ways.
