Grand Junction Fire Department Issues Fire Safety Alert

With multiple brush fires igniting in recent weeks, the Grand Junction Fire Department (GJFD) has issued an urgent fire safety alert, urging residents to take precautions before conducting open burns. Officials stress that dry conditions and high winds have increased fire risks, making safety measures more critical than ever.

Increase in Brush Fires Raises Concerns

Since March 1st, GJFD crews have responded to 13 brush fires, including two out-of-control open burns reported on March 10th. Firefighters say these incidents highlight the dangers of burning in unpredictable weather conditions and the need for residents to follow fire safety guidelines.

“Wildland fires can spread rapidly, threatening homes, wildlife, and firefighters on the ground,” a GJFD spokesperson said. “Taking extra precautions can prevent disasters.”

Fire Safety Recommendations

Officials have outlined key safety steps to help prevent future fires:

  • Check weather conditions before burning.
  • Avoid burning during red flag warnings.
  • Keep a water source or fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Never leave an open burn unattended.
  • Call 911 immediately if a fire gets out of control.

Local authorities stress that fire prevention is a shared responsibility. A small lapse in judgment can lead to devastating consequences, particularly in dry and windy conditions.

Growing Fire Risks in Mesa County

Mesa County has seen an uptick in fire-related incidents, largely due to changing weather patterns and an increase in open burns. With high temperatures and persistent drought conditions, the risk of wildfires is expected to remain elevated throughout the season.

Fire officials remind residents that unauthorized burns or negligent fire practices could result in penalties or legal consequences. To prevent unnecessary danger, the GJFD recommends following all state and local regulations on burning permits and fire safety protocols.

Community Cooperation Is Key

Firefighters are calling on the community to remain vigilant and report any potential fire hazards. By taking simple precautions and staying informed, residents can play a crucial role in reducing fire risks and keeping their neighborhoods safe.

As fire season continues, the GJFD remains committed to rapid response efforts and public education to minimize wildfire threats.
