In Grand Junction, the mantra “the show must go on” has proven true once again. After an alleged drunk-driving crash disrupted preparations at Creative Avenues Preschool, The Theatre Project is forging ahead with their festive production of Annie.
The crash caused shock and concern but has not shaken the resolve of the performers and production team. The show will open as planned from December 20th to 22nd at the Avalon Theatre, promising audiences an unforgettable experience.
A Shock to the System
Two months of preparation, rehearsals, and fine-tuning came to an abrupt halt when a vehicle collided with the preschool where The Theatre Project rehearses. For the cast and crew, it was an unnerving interruption.
Lucinda, who shares the role of Annie, recounted her reaction: “I was really scared and surprised because I had gotten back from rehearsal an hour before.” Her co-star Remington echoed the sentiment, saying, “I was questioning my mom when I heard about it. I was like, ‘Wait?!?! What happened?!?!’”
Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and the production suffered no material losses. However, the disruption created a ripple effect of challenges.
Rallying the Team
Artistic Director Dana Schmidt acknowledged the mental toll: “It was more of a mental setback than anything. We just picked everything up and moved on.”
With 75 performers involved, rescheduling rehearsals was a logistical puzzle, but the team’s commitment remained unwavering. “Well, we are theatre people, so the show must go on,” quipped Brenna Fowler, who plays Miss Hannigan.
Despite the initial setback, spirits are high. Lucinda shared her relief and determination: “I am really glad I was not here. We have been able to bounce back and get things on track.” Remington added, “I am actually super excited! I have been going over my script like crazy.”
A Community United
The resilience of the theatre community is matched by the support of local organizations and families. No props, costumes, or vital equipment were damaged, allowing the production to move forward without additional financial strain.
Meanwhile, Creative Avenues Preschool, the crash site, is facing significant repair costs. Damages are expected to total tens of thousands of dollars, with plans to install a concrete barricade to prevent future accidents.
