As Thanksgiving ushers in one of the busiest travel times of the year, the Indiana State Police (ISP) are stepping up efforts to ensure safety on the roads. With millions of Americans on the move, First Sgt. Brian Walker emphasized the importance of caution and preparedness.
The Dangers of Speed
Excessive speed remains a leading concern for road safety, particularly during the holidays.
“Speed is a real problem,” Sgt. Walker explained. “We’ve seen a significant increase in reckless speeding over the past few years, and it spikes around holiday travel. Slowing down and planning extra time for your trip can save lives.”
This year, ISP has already responded to multiple accidents, underscoring the urgency of their message.
Increased Patrols on Highways
To keep roadways safe, Indiana troopers are out in full force. The heightened presence aims to reduce collisions and protect travelers.
“We’re aggressively patrolling highways and interstates to make sure everyone can reach their destination safely,” Sgt. Walker said.
With millions expected to hit the road, drivers are urged to stay vigilant and follow traffic laws.
Adapting to Weather Conditions
Holiday travel in late November often comes with unpredictable weather. Rain, snow, and icy roads can drastically affect driving conditions.
ISP recommends the following precautions to ensure safety:
- Check the weather forecast before leaving.
- Ensure your vehicle is equipped with winter essentials like an ice scraper, blankets, and a flashlight.
- Increase following distances to account for slick roads.
A Record-Breaking Holiday Rush
According to AAA, nearly 80 million people are expected to travel for Thanksgiving this year, with many hitting the highways. This figure could set new records, putting extra strain on roadways and increasing the potential for accidents.
ISP advises drivers to stay alert, avoid distractions like texting, and maintain a safe speed. “It’s about getting to point B alive,” Walker added.
