Investigation into Fatal Shooting at Martin’s Supermarket

ELKHART, Ind. (WPTA) — As the investigation into a fatal shooting at Martin’s Supermarket continues, Elkhart County Prosecutor Vicki Becker has called for “time and objectivity” in the inquiry. The incident, which left three dead and two injured, has prompted significant concern.

Details of the Incident

The shooting occurred when 54-year-old Juan M. Sanchez opened fire inside the store, killing 49-year-old Benjamin S. Jeffrey and 19-year-old Annasue Rocha. Rocha, an employee of Martin’s, and Jeffrey, a customer, were tragically caught in the gunman’s path.

As Sanchez attempted to flee the store, Cpl. Paul Vandenburg and Officer Ethan Pasternak of the Elkhart Police Department confronted him. Sanchez then fired several shots at the officers before being fatally shot by law enforcement.

Officer Injuries

Both officers sustained injuries during the exchange. Cpl. Vandenburg has since been treated and released from the hospital, while Officer Pasternak remains hospitalized in fair and stable condition.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Prosecutor Becker emphasized the need for patience and thoroughness in understanding the events that led to the tragic incident.
