Culvert Replacement to Close Section of Lake Avenue for Six Weeks

Drivers in Fort Wayne should prepare for significant road closures beginning Monday, Nov. 11, as a section of Lake Avenue will be closed for crucial culvert replacement work. The closure is expected to last through the end of the year, as part of ongoing stormwater improvements aimed at reducing flooding in the area.

Road Closure Details and Timeline

Fort Wayne City Utilities announced that the closure will affect Lake Avenue between Reed Road and Old Maysville Road. Crews will be working to replace the culvert and the road infrastructure beneath the street, a part of the Pierson Drain Phase II stormwater improvement project. The closure is expected to last six weeks, with work set to wrap up by December 31, 2024.

Addressing Longstanding Flooding Issues

The culvert replacement project comes in response to years of flooding issues along Lake Avenue. During periods of heavy rainfall, the road has been prone to flooding, making it impassable for drivers. The new culvert will increase the water flow capacity of the Pierson Drain, allowing excess rainwater to drain more efficiently into the river, ultimately helping to prevent future flooding in the area.

City officials noted that the upgrade to the stormwater infrastructure is necessary for improving safety and accessibility in the region, especially during severe weather events. Once completed, the new culvert is expected to provide long-term relief from the ongoing flooding problem.

Detour Route and Alternate Travel Plans

To accommodate the closure, City Utilities has posted a detour route for drivers. Motorists will be directed to take Reed Road, East State Boulevard, and Maplecrest Road as alternative routes. The detour is expected to help manage traffic flow around the construction zone and reduce congestion during the six-week closure.

A map of the detour and project area is available for those who need more detailed guidance on the route adjustments. Officials are urging drivers to plan for additional travel time during the closure period and to be cautious when approaching the work zone.
