GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Mesa County Libraries have relaunched their seasonal Seed Library, a community resource designed to encourage gardening and sustainable food practices. The program allows residents to take and donate seed packets, offering a chance for people of all ages to explore gardening without cost barriers.
A Growing Community Initiative
The Seed Library started three years ago as a way to repurpose leftover seeds from the Discovery Garden at 5th and Chipeta. What began as a small effort has since expanded into a countywide initiative.
“The idea came from our Discovery Garden,” said Michele Hickey, Library Associate for Mesa County Libraries. “We had extra seeds and thought—why not share them? That’s how the collection started.”
How It Works
The Seed Library is open at the Mesa County Central Library from now until August. Residents can stop by and pick up to three seed packets per month—no library card required. The selection includes:
- Herbs
- Flowers
- Vegetable seeds
Hickey emphasized that the goal is to provide variety and encourage people to try something new in their gardens.
A Hobby for All Generations
The initiative has attracted people of all ages. Hickey has seen young children picking seeds with their parents, older adults using the program to enhance their gardening skills, and even teenagers excited about growing jalapeños.
“It’s been amazing to watch different generations connect through gardening,” she said.
More Than Just Gardening
Beyond the enjoyment of growing plants, the program aims to educate people about food sustainability and self-sufficiency.
“The goal is to help people learn about gardening, expand their knowledge, and even teach them how to grow their own food,” Hickey explained.
Last year, the Seed Library distributed approximately 4,500 seed packets. This year, Mesa County Libraries are also hosting gardening programs like “Spring Seed Exchange” and “Seed Starting Indoors” to further support community interest.
Residents who want to donate seeds can check with the Central Library to see which varieties are being accepted. For more details, visit the Mesa County Libraries website at mesacountylibraries.org.
