A Detroit mother has been charged with six counts of criminal offenses for causing a deadly car crash that claimed the life of her 2-year-old daughter and injured her infant son. The crash occurred on July 20, 2023, on Southfield Freeway in Allen Park, Michigan.
The tragic incident
According to the 24th District Court, Nyasha Pool was driving a minivan on the northbound lane of Southfield Freeway when she collided with another vehicle and then a barricade. Pool’s 2-year-old daughter and 2-month-old son were in the backseat of the minivan at the time of the crash. The 2-year-old girl was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt when the crash occurred. She was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. She died from her injuries. The infant boy was said to be in a car seat at the time of the crash. He was initially in critical condition following the crash. His current condition is unknown at this time.
The investigation and arrest
Investigators say Pool was under the influence of alcohol when the crash occurred. She was reportedly arrested at her home on Sept. 7, 2023, after a warrant was issued for her arrest. The court’s website says the mother has been charged with the following:
- 1 count of operating while under the influence of liquor causing death
- 1 count of driving while license suspended/revoked causing death
- 2 counts of second-degree child abuse
- 1 count of operating while under the influence of liquor causing incapacitating injuries
- 1 count of driving while license suspended/revoked causing serious injury
Pool is currently being held on a $25,000 bond. She is required to wear an alcohol tether and is prohibited from driving or entering any place that serves or dispenses alcohol. A probable cause conference is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 21, 2023.
The reaction and prevention
The fatal crash has sparked outrage and grief among the community and the family of the victim. The driver of the second vehicle in the July 20 crash reportedly remained at the scene to talk to authorities. It is unclear if they sustained any injuries. The family of the 2-year-old girl has expressed their sorrow and anger over the loss of their loved one. They have also called for justice and accountability for Pool.
The crash has also raised awareness and concern over the dangers of drunk driving and the importance of child safety in vehicles. Authorities have urged drivers to refrain from driving while intoxicated and to ensure that their children are properly secured in car seats and seatbelts. Anyone with concerns about how to properly install a child seat in their vehicle can contact their local fire department for assistance.
