Incarcerated Tiger King star Joe Exotic has made a stunning proposal from his Texas prison cell: he wants Colorado Governor Jared Polis to grant clemency to former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters if President Donald Trump agrees to free him in return.
The self-proclaimed “win-win” deal has gone viral, reigniting debates about pardons, election integrity claims, and political horse-trading just weeks before Trump takes office.
The Proposal Straight from Joe Exotic
Speaking exclusively to Grand Junction’s KJCT from the Federal Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas, Joe Exotic laid out the swap in raw detail.
He asked Governor Polis to offer President Trump a simple trade: sign Tina Peters’ clemency papers and Trump signs his.
“Half the nation will praise Governor Polis for saving the Tiger King,” Exotic said, fully aware of the spectacle he was creating.
He insists both he and Peters have served enough time, suffered enough, and deserve to “go home and die in our own beds.”
Exotic, now 61, claims he is battling two types of cancer, lost both parents while locked up, and spent nearly three years in solitary confinement.
His original 22-year sentence was reduced to 21 years in 2023, but eight years inside have clearly taken their toll.
Who Is Tina Peters and Why Is She in Prison?
Tina Peters, 69, became a hero to election-denial circles after she was convicted of tampering with Mesa County voting equipment in 2021.
Prosecutors proved she allowed an unauthorized person to copy sensitive election data, actions she claimed were meant to “preserve” records after the 2020 election.
In October 2024, a Colorado judge sentenced her to nine years in state prison, calling her actions a direct attack on democracy.
Peters reported to prison in early December and immediately began seeking clemency from Governor Polis, a Democrat who has shown little sympathy for 2020 election challengers.
Her supporters have flooded social media with #FreeTinaPeters posts, turning her case into a rallying cry for many Trump loyalists.
Why Joe Exotic Thinks the Deal Could Actually Work
Exotic believes Polis holds “Trump’s golden goose” because Tina Peters remains a powerful symbol for the MAGA base.
He argues that freeing Peters would give Polis rare bipartisan praise and national attention while costing him nothing politically with his own party, since Peters is already convicted under state law.
Meanwhile, Trump has repeatedly hinted he will issue sweeping pardons when he returns to office, including for some January 6 defendants and others who claim political persecution.
Exotic is openly banking on that promise.
He has filed appeals all the way to the Supreme Court and maintains the star witness against him, a paid informant, later admitted to lying.
The Massive Jurisdictional Roadblock
Here’s the catch nobody can get around: only Governor Polis can free Tina Peters because she was convicted in state court.
Only the President can pardon Joe Exotic because his crimes are federal.
That very divide is exactly what makes the swap idea possible in theory, but experts call it unprecedented and legally dubious.
No governor has ever successfully negotiated a pardon trade with a president, and Polis’s office declined to comment when approached by multiple outlets.
Trump has not publicly responded to Exotic’s plea either.
Public Reaction Explodes Online
The story has blown up across social media.
On X, #JoeExotic and #FreeTinaPeters both trended briefly in the U.S. on Thursday night, with thousands of users calling the proposed swap everything from “genius” to “the most 2025 thing ever.”
Some Coloradans started a tongue-in-cheek petition urging Polis to “make the trade and become an American legend.”
Others pointed out the dark irony of two controversial figures trying to bargain their way out of consequences.
Yet for the families watching their loved ones waste away behind bars, the stunt hits differently.
Joe Exotic says he just wants to hold his new husband again, who he claims was deported during his incarceration, and to breathe free air before cancer takes him.
Tina Peters’ son has begged the governor daily to show mercy to his aging mother.
Whether their desperate gambit moves the needle remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: in Trump’s America, even the Tiger King believes anything is negotiable.
