Apple’s iOS 27 Speed Fixes Echo Its 2018 Playbook

Apple Already Ran This Play Once, in 2018
The parallel isn’t subtle once you line up the dates. A December 2016 software update throttled processors on iPhones with aging batteries to stop them from randomly shutting down, and when that throttling became public in December 2017, it triggered a consumer backlash and a wave of lawsuits.
Apple eventually paid $113 million to more than 30 states in November 2020 to settle claims it misrepresented how those updates affected performance, and separately agreed to pay up to $500 million in a class action covering iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus and SE owners, with payouts landing around $65 per claim once appeals cleared.

The same release adds a new slider that lets users dial Liquid Glass anywhere from fully clear to fully tinted, addressing legibility complaints without abandoning the design. It also ships Siri’s generative AI overhaul built with Google Gemini technology, alongside smaller touches like new Siri pace and expressivity controls introduced during the beta cycle. Why Is Apple Being So Careful With Seven-Year-Old Phones?
