SpaceX Turns Louisiana Wetlands Into Biggest Starship Launch Site
SpaceX commits $100 billion to a 125,000-acre Louisiana spaceport that unlocks high-cadence Starship launches for AI data centers and Mars while promising jobs.
SpaceX will invest $100 billion to build Starbase Louisiana, a 125,000-acre launch complex in Vermilion Parish designed for thousands of Starship flights a year, with construction set for 2027 and the first launch targeted for 2029.
The project, announced Tuesday with Governor Jeff Landry and SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell in Abbeville, expands far beyond the company’s constrained Texas headquarters and Florida pads. It turns former Exxon marshland into what Elon Musk called the biggest launch site on Earth.
SpaceX Commits $100 Billion on Pecan Island
The site sits on roughly 125,000 acres around Pecan Island along the Gulf Coast, about 45 miles southwest of Lafayette. Louisiana Economic Development said the facility will become the company’s fourth and largest launch site.
At full buildout it is expected to include five launch complexes, each with two pads and a propellant farm, plus propellant production, power generation, vehicle processing, deep-water shipping, an airport and employee housing.
That mix of pads, farms and support yards is what separates a high-cadence spaceport from a single-range pad. Five complexes with two pads apiece create the physical slots for the tower count Musk has described. Vehicle processing and deep-water shipping close the loop with the Texas Starfactory so completed stages can move by barge rather than road.

SpaceX said the complex will support missions to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond. Shotwell described it as a project like no other during the Abbeville event.
Scale is the point. Texas operations grew over a decade on a fraction of the land. Louisiana starts with a $100 billion commitment sized for the flight rates the smaller sites cannot host.
Why the Gulf Coast Wins on Cadence
Texas Starbase is squeezed onto about 350 acres with public beach access requirements. Florida pads at Cape Canaveral share range time with other operators. Louisiana offers unfettered coastal marsh with room for multiple towers and no competing launch traffic.

Shotwell said the site will be a self-sustaining spaceport with propellant production, power generation and shipping. SpaceX has spent seven years searching for a place that can handle fully reusable Starship at rate, meaning thousands of launches a year.
Musk wrote that Starbase Louisiana will ultimately have over a dozen launch towers, enabling more than 30 Starship flights per day and making it the biggest launch site on Earth. SpaceX makes sci-fi real, he added.
Cadence collapses without fuel, power and clear range. Henry Hub gas nearby feeds methane production on site. Waterway access keeps oversized hardware moving. Empty marsh around the pads reduces the exclusion zones that throttle flight rate elsewhere. Those four advantages stack into the daily tempo Texas land limits and Florida range sharing cannot match.
Five Complexes Built for Orbital Data Centers
The second-order driver is capacity. SpaceX needs far higher flight rates to loft massive constellations of AI processing satellites and to support multiplanetary logistics. Current sites cannot deliver that volume.
LED materials note the location’s natural gas, expansive acreage and Gulf trajectories will facilitate Earth-orbit missions for building orbital data centers and expanding connectivity, plus flights to the Moon and Mars. The newly public company faces investor pressure to show a path to scale after shares fell more than 30 percent from post-IPO highs while remaining above the $135 offer price. The Louisiana announcement lifted the stock roughly 2 percent on the day.
Construction of the first facilities is expected to begin in 2027. LED places initial operations online around 2030, while SpaceX targets a 2029 first flight. The company will hire heavily from nearby communities, aiming to repeat the 60-to-80 percent local hiring rate seen in Texas.

Orbital data centers and multiplanetary logistics both demand the same thing: repeated mass to orbit. Five complexes give the company parallel processing lines instead of a single bottleneck pad. 3,000 Direct Jobs at Nearly Double Local Wages
Louisiana Economic Development projects 3,000 direct jobs averaging $92,600 a year, 192 percent above the Vermilion Parish average wage. Indirect jobs are estimated at more than 8,100, for over 11,100 total opportunities in Acadiana.
Musk and Shotwell have floated higher figures of 4,000 to 10,000 based on Texas experience. Roles will span engineers, technicians, welders, tube benders and energy workers. Vermilion Parish Police Jury President Chad Vallo said the project offers opportunities for grandchildren to stay home for employment.

Local payments under a PILOT agreement include $20 million upfront plus $25 million a year for 25 years with escalators, expected to generate more than $820 million for the parish. SpaceX will also make a $25 million charitable donation to the Community Foundation of Acadiana and offer Vermilion residents a 50 percent Starlink discount with no hardware cost for new signups.
Governor Landry compared the deal to the Louisiana Purchase and said it pushes the state beyond $250 billion in new investment. “Today, Louisiana will give America the stars,” he said.
Wage levels near double the parish average change household math in Acadiana. The 60-to-80 percent local hiring target used in Texas, if repeated here, would route most of those roles into nearby communities rather than imported crews. Indirect jobs above 8,100 spread the effect into suppliers and services across the region.
The Exxon Settlement Land and Coastal Pledges
The acreage became available through a settlement of long-running coastal damage lawsuits that blamed ExxonMobil for pollution and land loss. A federal judge dismissed the Vermilion case in August after Landry announced the deal in June. Exxon is also plugging orphaned wells at no taxpayer cost.
SpaceX has engaged the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority and other agencies. The company plans to partner on expanding the state’s Coastal Master Plan, including Gulf shoreline protection breakwaters. Coastal land is eroding at one to three meters a year in places.
Shotwell said SpaceX will use only a small portion of the acreage and seek to preserve wetlands for wildlife, fishing, hunting and boating. The site sits near the Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge and other sensitive habitat. Local hunting and fishing leaseholders lost access earlier in 2026 as negotiations advanced. Environmental reviews, including potential impacts on migratory birds and species such as the whooping crane, remain ahead.

Local reaction on X mixed job optimism with coast concerns. One New Orleans voice called the economic news great while hoping it works out for the environment. Others saw it as a way for young people to stay for high-pay tech work instead of leaving the state.

Stock Pressure Meets the 30-Flights-a-Day Bet
SpaceX, trading as SPCX since its June listing, has been under pressure to prove profitability while funding Starship, Starlink, AI compute and now this buildout. The Louisiana site is framed as the missing piece for the flight rates Musk has long described as necessary.
SpaceX posted that the high-cadence launch site for Starship will open a pathway to the stars for humanity, thanking Landry and the people of Louisiana. The company already operates Falcon and Dragon fleets, Starlink, Grok AI and is building a major chip complex in Texas with Tesla.

Gulf Gas Feeds On-Site Propellant and Power
Self-sustaining design is the mechanism behind the cadence claim. Shotwell’s description ties propellant production, power generation and shipping into one campus so each flight does not depend on fragile off-site supply chains.
Natural gas near the Henry Hub supplies the methane Starship burns. On-site propellant farms at each of the five complexes shorten the path from feedstock to loaded vehicle. Power generation on the same acreage keeps pad systems and production running without waiting on distant grid upgrades.
Deep-water and Intracoastal access then links the Louisiana pads to the Texas Starfactory by barge. Stages built in Texas can arrive by water, process on site, and fly from the Gulf without highway limits on size. That loop is how thousands of launches a year move from slogan to schedule.
Employee housing and an airport round out the campus so the workforce and light logistics sit beside the pads rather than commuting across the parish for every shift.
Parish Payments Build a Twenty Five Year Floor
The PILOT structure turns the launch bet into predictable parish revenue. Twenty million dollars upfront lands early. Twenty-five million dollars a year for 25 years, with escalators, builds the long stream LED expects to top $820 million.

Those figures sit beside the jobs baseline, not in place of it. Three thousand direct roles at $92,600 average pay anchor household income. The payment floor gives the Police Jury and parish services a separate cash path while construction and hiring ramp.
Landry’s comparison to the Louisiana Purchase framed the deal as state-scale. For Vermilion, the test is narrower and longer: whether the 2027 start, the 2029 flight target, and the local hiring pattern hold as the towers rise.
For Vermilion Parish the shift is concrete: an oil-and-gas coast that helped build the industrial past now hosts the infrastructure for routine spaceflight. Whether the first 2029 launch and the promised local hiring materialize on schedule will test both the engineering and the political bargain that delivered the land.
The world’s largest planned spaceport is now on the drawing board in the Louisiana marsh.
