Colorado Mesa University’s Cultural Inclusion Council (CIC) is bringing its signature event back for the seventh year—an extravagant fashion show set to highlight the diverse cultures represented on campus. Scheduled for Saturday, March 1, the event promises a vibrant mix of traditional attire, music, and performances, all celebrating cultural heritage in a dazzling display of global glamour.
A Celebration of Tradition and Identity
This year’s theme, “Global Glamour: A Celebration of Cultures,” is more than just a name—it’s a mission. CIC Director Isenia Fregoso explained how the event goes beyond fashion, embracing the values and traditions that define various cultural identities.
“It’s not just about the clothes,” said Fregoso. “We’re focusing on traditions and the significance of these cultural expressions. Some of the student alliance groups will be performing dances and other showcases tied directly to their heritage.”
The entire production is student-led, from organizing the event to selecting the lineup of models, who are all members of CIC’s alliance groups. The outfits worn on the runway will be authentic garments brought from students’ home countries, providing an immersive experience for the audience.
A Platform for Learning and Representation
Beyond the glamour and spectacle, the event serves an educational purpose. By presenting cultural attire and traditions, the CIC fashion show offers attendees a chance to broaden their perspectives and appreciate the backgrounds of their peers.
Nia Taubr, a member of the International Student Alliance, emphasized the importance of this opportunity: “It’s a great learning experience for the audience. They get to see the different cultures and backgrounds of CMU students. A lot of students are wearing outfits that come straight from their home countries, which makes this really special.”
With Grand Junction not known for its diversity, the event carries even more significance. It acts as a bridge for cultural exchange and a moment of pride for many students.
More Than Just Fashion
For members of CMU’s Latino Student Alliance and other student groups, the fashion show is about visibility and awareness.
“There’s not much diversity in Grand Junction in general,” said Elizabeth Fernandez Salas. “This event gives us the chance to share our culture and teach people about our food, our clothing, and our traditions.”
Aside from the performances and fashion showcases, the event serves as a fundraiser for CIC, supporting future programs and events aimed at promoting cultural inclusion on campus.
What to Expect at the Show
Attendees can anticipate a lively and colorful display featuring:
- Traditional and contemporary outfits from various cultures
- Dance performances and musical showcases from student alliance groups
- A unique opportunity to engage with different cultural expressions
With each passing year, the CIC fashion show continues to grow in scale and significance, fostering an environment where cultural identity is not just celebrated but embraced by the entire CMU community.
