Girls on the Run Marks 25 Years in Western Colorado

A quarter-century of impact. That’s what Girls on the Run of Western Colorado is celebrating this year. Since its inception, the nonprofit has empowered young girls through a unique blend of athleticism, life skills, and self-confidence-building programs.

A Legacy of Empowerment

Girls on the Run isn’t just about running. It’s about fostering strength—inside and out. The organization combines physical activity with lessons on leadership, self-worth, and teamwork, ensuring that participants leave with more than just improved endurance.

Executive Director Emily Moen Eastham highlighted how the program has changed lives: “For 25 years, we’ve given girls the tools to navigate challenges, set goals, and build confidence. It’s inspiring to see how far we’ve come.”

Spring season kicks off in March, and registration is already open. Parents looking to enroll their children can find more details on the organization’s website.

The Core of the Program

With sessions designed for elementary and middle school girls, the program integrates physical activity with vital life lessons. Each practice session covers topics such as:

  • Developing a positive self-image
  • Setting personal and achievable goals
  • Practicing empathy and kindness
  • Strengthening leadership skills

Participants culminate their experience with a celebratory 5K, which isn’t about competition but rather about accomplishing something meaningful together.

Impact on the Community

For many in Western Colorado, Girls on the Run is more than just an after-school program. It’s a movement. Families, educators, and volunteers have seen firsthand how these lessons extend beyond the track, shaping future leaders in the community.

“Girls leave with a stronger sense of self, an appreciation for teamwork, and the ability to set and achieve goals,” said Eastham. “That’s what makes this so special.”

What’s Next for Girls on the Run?

As the organization celebrates its milestone, there’s a strong focus on the future. Expanding to more schools, increasing accessibility, and reaching even more young girls are all part of the plan.

For those looking to support, volunteer opportunities are available, and donations help ensure that every girl—regardless of financial situation—has a chance to participate.
