Fishing Licenses Available: CPW Highlights Anglers’ Role in Conservation

As fishing season kicks into gear, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is reminding anglers that their efforts go beyond just catching fish—they play a key role in managing the state’s aquatic ecosystems. CPW emphasizes that responsible fishing practices and proper equipment care are essential for preserving biodiversity.

Preventing Invasive Species: A Crucial Responsibility

State officials are urging anglers to take extra precautions to keep invasive species at bay. Zebra mussels and other aquatic nuisance species pose a significant threat to local water bodies, and CPW is asking for help in preventing their spread.

  • Always clean fishing equipment thoroughly after use.
  • Drain all water from boats and let them dry completely.
  • Be mindful of local regulations regarding invasive species prevention.

By following these simple steps, anglers can help maintain healthy fish populations and protect Colorado’s waterways for future generations.

How Fishing Supports Conservation

Fishing isn’t just a hobby—it’s an essential part of fishery management. CPW collaborates with anglers to ensure balanced ecosystems and healthy fish populations. Through careful harvesting, recreational fishers contribute to:

  • Removing species that could disrupt local ecosystems.
  • Encouraging the growth of targeted fish populations.
  • Reducing the spread of aquatic diseases.

Ben Felt, Northwest Region Senior Aquatic Biologist for CPW, stressed the importance of angling in conservation efforts. “Angling is a huge part of what we do as an agency, both within our mission and as we’re managing these fisheries as well. Fishing is very important for the environment.”

Fishing: A Personal Connection to Nature

For many, fishing is more than a pastime—it’s a lifelong passion that fosters a deep connection to the outdoors. Felt himself attributes his career in aquatic biology to his early experiences with fishing.

“I know that was instrumental for me in me becoming a fish biologist for this agency,” he shared, reflecting on how his childhood love for fishing led him to his current role.

Getting Your Fishing License

CPW makes it easy for anglers to get out on the water. Fishing licenses are available for purchase online or at local CPW offices. One of the perks? A license purchased for the season remains valid for 13 months, giving anglers plenty of time to enjoy their favorite spots.

With fishing season in full swing, CPW encourages both seasoned anglers and newcomers to embrace responsible fishing practices. Whether it’s for sport, relaxation, or conservation, every cast contributes to the health of Colorado’s aquatic ecosystems.
