Guns Drawn in Garfield County Road Rage Incidents Raise Alarm Over Felony Menacing
Sheriff’s Office warns of serious legal consequences as tempers flare on Colorado roads
Two road rage confrontations in Garfield County over the past two weeks escalated to dangerous levels when drivers allegedly pointed firearms at others in traffic disputes, according to a statement from the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO).
The incidents, though unrelated, share a common thread: a moment of anger that could result in felony charges and jail time.
Felony Menacing Charges on the Table
GCSO officials emphasized that brandishing a firearm during a road dispute constitutes felony menacing, a charge that can carry significant prison time in Colorado—even if no shots are fired.
“One individual pointed what turned out to be a BB gun that resembled an automatic pistol,” said Public Information Officer Walter Stowe. “He ended up with four months in jail. We don’t take it lightly.”
The sheriff’s office stressed that intimidating another driver with any kind of weapon—real or replica—will likely result in arrest, charges, and permanent consequences.
A Plea for Composure Behind the Wheel
As tensions run high on busy Colorado roadways, Stowe issued a direct appeal to drivers:
“We want people to pause and think before they act. That moment of anger could cost you your freedom and your future.”
Officials noted that road rage incidents have increased in frequency statewide, often involving weapons or threats that rapidly escalate a minor traffic dispute into a criminal matter.
Public Safety Reminder Ahead of Holiday Travel
The warning comes ahead of the Memorial Day weekend, which typically brings an uptick in road traffic and emotionally charged encounters behind the wheel. With law enforcement already ramping up DUI and speed enforcement, GCSO said it’s critical for drivers to stay calm, patient, and non-confrontational.
“Road rage is never worth a felony,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Think of your family, your job, your future—before you reach for a weapon.”
