Grand Rivers Humane Society Nears a Milestone: 10,000 Adoptions

Grand Rivers Humane Society, a cornerstone of the Grand Junction community, is on the brink of an extraordinary achievement—its 10,000th animal adoption. This milestone marks decades of dedication to addressing pet overpopulation and connecting animals with loving homes.

A Local Solution to a Local Need

Grand Rivers Humane Society operates with a clear mission: to provide a second chance for pets in need. Partnering exclusively with Mesa County Animal Services, the organization takes in animals of all kinds, from shy cats to injured dogs, ensuring they receive the care and opportunity they deserve.

“We’re a local solution to a local problem,” explained Nan McNees, the society’s president. “We take the friendly, the shy, the old, the young, the sick, the injured, the pregnant, the puppies.”

This year alone, Grand Rivers has assisted in rehoming 400 dogs from Mesa County Animal Services. Their work extends beyond just intake; they actively help the county’s adoptable pets find their forever families, ensuring no animal is left behind.

Counting Down to 10,000

As of Sunday, the shelter had reached 9,977 adoptions. Now, the excitement is building as they approach the significant milestone. To celebrate, the humane society has planned a special surprise for the adopter of the 10,000th pet.

“We’re going to honor the adopters and the pet, the ten-thousandth adoption,” McNees shared enthusiastically. “We have a bunch of gifts to give them.”

This gesture highlights the organization’s gratitude towards the community that has supported its efforts through the years.

Adoption Opportunities in December

For those looking to bring a furry friend into their lives, Grand Rivers Humane Society offers several opportunities for adoption this month:

  • Dog Adoptions:
Held every Saturday in December next to the Chow Down Pet Supplies store in the Redlands at 2500 S. Broadway. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Cat Adoptions:
Taking place at the Kitty Korner, located at 1649 Main Street in Grand Junction, Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The organization emphasizes that adoption events are a chance to not only find a new family member but also support their mission of addressing pet overpopulation in the region.

Community Support and Future Goals

This milestone would not have been possible without strong community backing. A recent grant from the Western Colorado Community Foundation has provided essential resources to help the society tackle the growing pet overpopulation crisis in Mesa County.

McNees and her team hope to continue expanding their reach and impact, ensuring every pet in their care finds a loving home. This milestone is not just a celebration of the animals adopted but a testament to the unwavering commitment of Grand Rivers Humane Society and its supporters.
