Intermountain Health has confirmed that Bloomin’ Babies Birth Center in Grand Junction, Colorado, will officially close its doors on March 28, 2025. The decision comes as officials cite declining birth rates in Mesa County and a reduction in patient numbers at the facility.
Declining Birth Rates Lead to Closure
Mesa County has seen a steady drop in birth rates, and that trend has impacted the viability of the birth center. Fewer expectant mothers are choosing Bloomin’ Babies, making it difficult to sustain operations.
“We have carefully monitored birth trends and patient volumes over time,” said a representative from Intermountain Health. “Unfortunately, maintaining this facility is no longer feasible given the current numbers.”
The center, known for offering unmedicated and low-intervention births, has been a staple for mothers preferring a more natural birthing experience. But with fewer patients opting for these services, Intermountain Health made the tough call to shut it down.
Alternative Care Options for Expectant Mothers
Patients currently receiving care at Bloomin’ Babies will not be left without options. Intermountain Health has outlined several alternatives where they can continue prenatal and delivery care:
- Patterson OB-GYN and Midwifery Clinic – 610 25th Rd.
- Wellington OB-GYN Clinic – N. 8th St.
- St. Mary’s Family Medicine Clinic – 2698 Patterson Rd.
For those still seeking unmedicated or low-intervention births, St. Mary’s Regional Hospital offers similar options.
St. Mary’s Regional Hospital Expands Services
Intermountain Health reassures families that St. Mary’s Regional Hospital is equipped to provide a full range of labor and delivery options, mirroring what Bloomin’ Babies Birth Center once offered.
“St. Mary’s Regional Hospital offers comprehensive childbirth options to meet the full range of birth plans,” said Bryan Johnson, president of Intermountain St. Mary’s Regional Hospital. “This includes unmedicated births, epidurals, and high-risk pregnancy care.”
Expectant mothers at St. Mary’s will have access to certified nurse midwives and OB-GYNs, ensuring personalized and professional care. The facility also supports various pain relief methods, from natural techniques to traditional medication-based interventions.
What This Means for Mesa County
The closure of Bloomin’ Babies Birth Center marks a shift in birthing care trends in Mesa County. As birth rates decline, medical facilities are adjusting services to align with demand. While some families may be disappointed, Intermountain Health insists that high-quality maternal care remains a priority.
Mesa County officials are also monitoring the region’s birth trends to determine if additional changes to maternity services may be necessary in the future.
