Pepper and Spice Jamaican restaurant in Fort Wayne went above and beyond this Christmas by offering free meals to community members, following the success of their Thanksgiving giveaway.
A Community’s Generosity
The turnout on Christmas Day was overwhelming. Owners of Pepper and Spice quickly realized they needed extra hands to meet the demand, and soon found themselves reaching out for volunteers.
One volunteer, Jack Ryan, was unexpectedly thrust into action just 30 minutes before he showed up to help.
“I literally found out 15 or 30 minutes ago,” Ryan shared. “We were supposed to be doing the usual Christmas things, but I’m just blessed that I get to step into service before anything else.”
Ryan, who had recently moved to Fort Wayne, said he was amazed by the community’s willingness to give back.
“Since moving here, I’ve seen the community’s heart,” he said. “People are ready to serve, ready to give, and the opportunity on Christmas to help—it’s just a blessing.”
Giving Back on Christmas Day
Ryan spoke about how his view of Christmas had changed. “A couple of years ago, my Christmas was all about basketball, but now, it’s more meaningful,” he explained. “Serving is something everyone who can, should be doing.”
He even reflected on the spiritual significance of service during the holiday season.
“The day Jesus was born, I think about what He would be doing. He wouldn’t be home, enjoying snacks. He’d be out here serving the people.”
The Christmas meal giveaway was a testament to the spirit of community service that has become a hallmark of Fort Wayne.
