Grand Junction, Colo. (KJCT) – Orr Park is gearing up to join the pickleball craze with the construction of four new outdoor courts, a move that has local enthusiasts buzzing with excitement.
The sport, which combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, has surged in popularity across the nation. On Colorado’s western slope, it has become a daily pastime for many residents.
Local Excitement Builds
“I love pickleball! We’re out here every day, and it’s always bustling with players,” said I-Shuan Warr, a local pickleball enthusiast. “It’s a sport that appeals to everyone, from kids to seniors, and it’s just a great way to stay active.”
Orr Park’s upcoming courts will replace the former Raptor Skate Park, repurposing the area to better meet community demand.
Plans for the New Courts
The project will feature four dedicated courts, each surrounded by a four-foot fence to prevent interference between games. “The fencing ensures that balls stay contained within each court, reducing disruptions and making the play experience smoother,” explained Marc Mancuso, Fruita Parks and Recreation Director.
Construction is slated to begin within the week, with the courts expected to be completed early next year. Landscaping enhancements around the courts are planned to wrap up by May.
Community Support
The new courts come with a price tag of nearly $300,000, a cost well justified by the enthusiasm of the local pickleball community.
“The support has been overwhelming,” Mancuso added. “Every morning at the rec center, you can see the excitement from players who can’t wait to transition from indoor to outdoor play. Seeing the fence go up was a moment of celebration for many.”
Growing Popularity
Pickleball’s rapid rise in popularity across the U.S. reflects its accessibility and appeal to a wide age range. With the new Orr Park courts, Grand Junction is positioning itself as a hub for this dynamic sport, enhancing recreational options for residents.
Local players and city officials alike look forward to the courts becoming a reality, underscoring the importance of community-driven projects in fostering active and healthy lifestyles.
