Rescue Mission Unveils New Shelter for Women and Children
In a meaningful kickoff to National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week, The Rescue Mission in Fort Wayne officially dedicated its new shelter for women and children. The Gladys & Carolyn C. Wolf Charis House, now located at 5920 Decatur Road, represents a significant step forward in the organization’s ability to serve those in need.
Expanded Services for Greater Impact
The new facility offers both emergency services and comprehensive short- and long-term programs designed to support women and children in crisis. Moving from its previous location on Fairmount Place, the updated shelter can now accommodate more women, a critical improvement given the growing demand for services.
Upgrades at the new site include:
- Expanded parking and outdoor spaces.
- A larger dining room to foster community gatherings.
- Additional capacity to serve more families simultaneously.
“This move has really been an all-hands-on-deck process,” shared Pastor Thomas McArthur, President and CEO of The Rescue Mission. “Staff, volunteers, and the community have been invaluable in making this space a reality.”
Rising Demand for Assistance
The Rescue Mission is experiencing an unprecedented increase in demand, currently assisting over three times the usual number of individuals and families.
“We are seeing an increased need for food, services, and shelter for those experiencing a homeless crisis,” McArthur explained. “This move not only represents our preparations for the future but the ongoing need in our community to support the most vulnerable.”
The shelter’s new location is designed to address this surge while ensuring dignity and safety for those it serves.
Aligning With a National Movement
The dedication of the Gladys & Carolyn C. Wolf Charis House coincides with National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week, an intentional choice by the organization.
“This week is a way to raise awareness and start the important conversation on this crisis,” McArthur emphasized. “Our hungry and hurting neighbors need our help.”
Through events like this dedication, The Rescue Mission hopes to spark dialogue and action within the community, encouraging collaboration to address homelessness and food insecurity.
A Community Effort
The transition to the new facility highlights the power of collective action. Volunteers helped landscape, paint, and move items to prepare the space, underscoring the vital role of community involvement in tackling these pressing issues.
As Fort Wayne’s population of vulnerable individuals continues to grow, the new Charis House stands as a beacon of hope, offering resources and shelter for those most in need.
