Demolition Begins on Former Azar’s Big Boy in Waynedale

Monday marked the start of demolition on the former Azar’s Big Boy, a once-beloved Fort Wayne landmark. For many Waynedale residents, the sight of the iconic restaurant being torn down stirred a mix of sadness and nostalgia.

A Local Favorite’s Final Chapter

The restaurant, which closed its doors in 2020, left a lasting impression on the community. Marilyn Scheumann, a long-time Waynedale resident, shared her emotions as she watched the demolition unfold.

“It makes me sad,” she admitted. “We’ve got way too many gas stations in this area…it’s sad to see it go.”

Once a hub for family meals and community gatherings, the closure and subsequent vacancy of Azar’s Big Boy marked the end of an era.

What’s Coming Next?

The site of the former restaurant is set to be replaced by a gas station and convenience store, a development that has sparked mixed reactions among locals.

  • Some residents feel the area already has an overabundance of gas stations.
  • Others remain open to seeing how the new establishment might benefit the community.

Scheumann, while disappointed, expressed understanding of the challenges the Azar family faced. “I know Azar’s had to get out of the biz, or sell it, or do what was best for their family,” she said. “I guess we’ll see what the gas station brings for us.”

A Nostalgic Look Back

For decades, Azar’s Big Boy was more than just a restaurant. It served as a gathering spot for families, friends, and visitors. The red-and-white-checkered mascot and classic diner menu became symbols of comfort and familiarity in Waynedale.

Its closure in 2020 was a significant loss for many who grew up with its presence in the neighborhood. The demolition is another reminder of the community’s evolving landscape.

Balancing Memories and Progress

The transformation of the former Azar’s site into a gas station reflects the changing needs of Fort Wayne’s economy and infrastructure. However, for many residents, it also represents the challenges of preserving local history while embracing progress.

As Waynedale continues to grow, the community remains hopeful that new developments will honor the area’s rich past while catering to future needs.
