Cold Front Brings Sub-Freezing Temperatures to Southwestern Colorado Tonight
Southwestern Colorado is waking up to a sharp drop in temperatures after a cold front swept through the region, bringing chilly mornings and freeze warnings to parts of the Four Corners area. The sudden chill is a dramatic change from just yesterday’s warm weather.
A Sudden Shift from Warmth to Chill
Just yesterday, many were enjoying unseasonably warm spring days. Today? Not so much. Temperatures have plunged roughly 20 degrees compared to the previous day, leaving locals reaching for jackets instead of shorts. The cold front that moved in overnight has definitely put a stop to any early summer vibes.
Meteorologist Julia Blanchette and the First Alert Weather team have been tracking a low-pressure trough moving down from the northwest. Ahead of this trough, the cold front is already making its presence felt in the valley with temperatures starting out in the 40s and 50s, and struggling to climb much higher than the 60s by late afternoon. The skies are overcast, with dark clouds looming and a chance of passing showers in the high country — though valleys will see only a slight 20% chance of any rain.
Brace for Freezing Temps Overnight
The cold front isn’t done yet. As night falls, temperatures will continue to drop sharply. Some spots could even dip below freezing, which is a big deal for this time of year. The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning starting at midnight, lasting until 8 AM Thursday. This warning covers key areas like Cortez, Dove Creek, Mancos, Ignacio, and Durango.
Here’s what to expect overnight:
-
Low temperatures near 23°F in the Four Corners region
-
Potential damage to crops and sensitive vegetation
-
Early morning frost that could catch gardeners off guard
This freeze alert is a reminder that spring weather in Colorado can be wildly unpredictable — just when you think warmth is here to stay, Mother Nature throws a curveball.
Preparing for Thursday Morning’s Chill
If you’re heading out early Thursday morning, don’t forget your jacket. It’s going to be a cold start, and those who leave their plants or outdoor belongings unprotected might want to think twice.
By midday Thursday, temperatures will begin their climb again, with highs creeping back into the 70s. Sunshine will gradually return, giving the region a brief reprieve from the gloom. But, as is typical for spring, the weather rollercoaster isn’t over just yet.
Looking Ahead: More Warmth, Then Rain
The forecast hints at warming temperatures throughout the week, offering a few days of pleasant, sunny weather. However, rain chances are expected to return next week, which will likely bring cooler temps once again.
Spring in Southwestern Colorado is a bit like a box of chocolates — you never quite know what you’re going to get. One thing’s for sure though, residents and farmers alike will want to stay alert to sudden temperature swings and protect their crops accordingly.
With freeze warnings in place and chilly mornings ahead, now’s a good time to double-check those weather apps and maybe keep an extra sweater handy.
