A Fort Wayne bakery is feeling the pinch as egg prices soar and availability dwindles. Caking at Midnight, a local favorite, is facing unexpected challenges that could impact both its operations and customers.
Eggs Become a Luxury Ingredient
For bakery owner Allison Lewis, eggs are more than just an ingredient—they’re the foundation of nearly everything on the menu. But lately, getting them has turned into a real struggle.
“I went to the store last night, and I couldn’t believe it,” Lewis said. “The shelves were nearly empty. It wasn’t this bad before, but now I’m seeing prices shoot up and availability shrink.”
Egg shortages and rising costs are creating new obstacles for businesses like hers.
Prices Nearly Triple in One Year
It’s not just about supply. The cost of eggs has skyrocketed, putting financial pressure on small businesses.
- Last year, Lewis paid $27 for a bulk order of eggs.
- Now, that same order costs nearly $80.
- That’s almost three times the price in just 12 months.
With eggs playing a crucial role in cakes, pastries, and other baked goods, these price hikes force businesses to reconsider pricing and production strategies.
Committed to the Community
Despite the financial strain, Lewis remains dedicated to her customers. Caking at Midnight, located at 1202 W Main Street, continues to operate as usual, even if adjustments need to be made.
“One way or another, we’re pushing through,” she said.
Her goal remains the same—to make Caking at Midnight a staple in Fort Wayne for those who love sweet treats. But as the cost of essential ingredients continues to climb, the road ahead may require even more resilience.
