FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – Levan Scott Academy brought the community together for a special cultural heritage night in honor of Black History Month, offering students and families an immersive experience into Black culture and history.
A Night of Learning and Celebration
The event featured interactive activities aimed at educating students about the impact of Black leaders and cultural traditions. One of the main attractions was a tour of Citilink’s Rosa Parks bus, giving children a glimpse into the pivotal moments of the Civil Rights Movement.
Event organizer Alexandra Graham highlighted the importance of these gatherings. “Putting all this together takes a lot of work, but seeing the families come in, the smiles, the kids’ reactions—it makes it all worth it in the end,” she said.
Honoring Black Achievements
A special exhibit showcased prominent Black figures, with displays detailing their contributions across various fields. Families explored these stories, gaining insight into individuals who have shaped history through activism, science, art, and leadership.
City Councilwoman Rholi Booker also spoke to attendees, emphasizing the need to continue sharing cultural stories across generations.
Community Engagement and Future Plans
Levan Scott Academy has hosted similar events in the past, and organizers say they are committed to expanding these celebrations in the future. With a diverse student body, the school sees cultural education as a vital part of its mission.
“It’s really important,” Graham added. “We have such a diverse community and school, so it’s great to have all of our students and families here and have them learn about all these different cultures.”
