Humane Fort Wayne Receives $1 Million Grant to Expand Affordable Veterinary Care

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) — Humane Fort Wayne has been awarded a $1 million grant from Pet Smart Charities, a funding boost that promises to be “absolutely game-changing” for the organization as it works to make veterinary care more accessible to the local community.

A Transformative Grant for Accessible Care

The significant grant will help Humane Fort Wayne double its capacity to perform surgeries, particularly focusing on expanding affordable spay and neuter services. Melissa Gibson, community relations manager at Humane Fort Wayne, explained that the funds will be used to convert the organization’s wellness clinic into a fully public-facing, affordable spay/neuter clinic.

This transformation is expected to take a few months as the organization works to implement the changes. Once completed, the clinic will provide essential services to the community at a more affordable rate, helping to alleviate some of the pressure on local pet owners who face financial barriers to veterinary care.

“We honestly can’t wait to get started,” Gibson said. “It’s going to be fantastic. This will truly allow us to help more pets and owners in the area.”

Expanding Impact

Currently, the wellness clinic at Humane Fort Wayne is a key resource for the community, providing essential veterinary services at lower costs. However, the demand for affordable spay/neuter services often outstrips the clinic’s capacity. With the new funding, the organization will be able to significantly expand its services, reaching more pets in need of care and reducing the overall number of unwanted animals in the region.

The impact of this grant is expected to be felt across the Fort Wayne area, offering much-needed relief to pet owners and promoting responsible pet ownership.
