Vehicle fire causes traffic delays on I-70 westbound near Silverthorne

A vehicle fire on Interstate 70 westbound between Exit 205 at Silverthorne and Exit 203 at Frisco caused traffic delays and lane closures on Saturday afternoon, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Fire breaks out on vehicle hauler

The fire started on a vehicle hauler that was carrying several cars, around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 30, 2023. The driver of the hauler was able to detach the cab and move it away from the flames, but the trailer and the vehicles on it were engulfed in fire. No injuries were reported, but the fire created a large plume of smoke that was visible from miles away.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the Colorado State Patrol said it was not related to any road conditions or weather factors. The fire was extinguished by the local fire department, but the cleanup and removal of the damaged vehicles took several hours.

Traffic impacts and alternate routes

The fire resulted in the closure of both lanes of I-70 westbound near Silverthorne for about an hour, and then the reopening of the left lane only. The right lane remained closed until around 4 p.m., when the scene was cleared and all lanes were reopened. The closure caused significant traffic delays and backups for westbound travelers, especially during the peak holiday season.

The Colorado Department of Transportation advised drivers to use alternate routes if possible, such as US 6 over Loveland Pass or CO 9 over Hoosier Pass. Drivers were also urged to check the latest road conditions and travel alerts on COTrip.org or by calling 511 before heading out.
