The Grand Rivers Humane Society, a local animal shelter in Mesa County, Colorado, has been awarded a $50,000 grant from Petco Love, a national nonprofit organization that supports animal welfare. The grant will help the shelter improve the lives of pets and their families in the community.

Petco Love’s mission and impact

Petco Love is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1999 with the goal of creating a future in which no pet is unnecessarily euthanized. Since then, Petco Love has invested $330 million in adoption and other lifesaving efforts, and has helped find loving homes for 6.5 million pets in partnership with Petco and more than 4,000 animal welfare organizations across the U.S

Petco Love also provides resources and tools to help pet owners and caretakers keep their pets healthy and safe, such as Petco Love Lost, a searchable national database that uses facial recognition technology to reunite lost pets with their families

Every year, Petco Love awards grants to hundreds of animal shelters and rescues that share its vision and values. The grants are funded by public donations made at Petco stores and online

Since its inception, the Grand Rivers Humane Society has found homes for 9,332 cats and dogs. In 2023, the shelter adopted out 621 pets, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The shelter also helped 1,200 pets receive spay and neuter surgeries, and distributed 40,000 pounds of pet food to low-income families

How the grant will benefit the shelter and the community

The $50,000 grant from Petco Love will enable the Grand Rivers Humane Society to upgrade its facilities and equipment, and to expand its programs and services. The shelter plans to use the grant to purchase new kennels, cages, medical supplies, and software. The grant will also help the shelter increase its capacity to intake and care for more animals, and to offer more affordable and accessible veterinary care and pet education to the community

The grant was announced and celebrated at a special event at the Petco store in Grand Junction on January 28, 2024. The event was attended by representatives from Petco Love, the Grand Rivers Humane Society, and the local media. The event also featured some of the adoptable pets from the shelter, and encouraged the public to support the shelter’s mission and work

The Grand Rivers Humane Society expressed its gratitude and appreciation to Petco Love for the generous grant, and to the community for its continued support and donations. The shelter hopes that the grant will make a positive difference in the lives of the pets and the people in Mesa County
