Honor’s Robot Phone Works, Then Prices Itself Out

Honor put the Robot Phone on sale in China on August 18 at RMB 9,999, a 248-gram flagship with a 2.6-gram gimbal motor folded into its back.

A London hands-on found the tiny arm can hold a shot while you bounce through a station. Creators who already carry a phone and a pocket camera still have cheaper, tougher ways to get that footage.

Honor Built a 2.6g Motor So a Gimbal Could Disappear

Honor announced the HONOR Robot Phone in Guangzhou on August 12 as the first smartphone with a fully motorized 4-DoF mechanical gimbal in the body. The company first showed it at MWC 2026 in March, then took tracking shots to Cannes China Night and the Shanghai International Film Festival before China sales opened at 10:08 AM on August 18.

The arm is the whole pitch. Honor says it had to make its own 2.6g titanium gimbal motor because parts on the market would not fit a phone, and it claims the assembly is 65% smaller than mainstream gimbals with 200% more structural strength. Control speed is listed at up to 360 degrees per second. A Super Steel Flip Motor is rated at 120 N·m/L of torque density.

THE GIMBAL HONOR HAD TO BUILD

• The motor: A 2.6g titanium unit made in-house so a three-axis rig could hide in the back of a slab phone.
• The stack: Honor lists more than 100 precision parts, about 60 manufacturing steps, and more than 100 patents on the Titanium Agile Gimbal.
• The body: 151.43 x 72.86 x 9.59 mm and 248 grams, with a 6.31-inch LTPO OLED that runs 1 to 120Hz and peaks at 6,800 nits.
• The computer: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, a 7,060mAh silicon-carbon battery, 120W wired charging, and 50W wireless, plus Honor’s H1 imaging chip.

The 200MP main sensor sits on that arm, a 1/1.28-inch chip with an f/1.6 lens. Folded away behind a plastic cover, the same module still works as a normal phone camera with ordinary optical stabilization. Beside it sit a 200MP 1/1.4-inch periscope with 2.7x optical zoom and a 50MP ultra-wide covering 122 degrees. A 50MP front camera is there for calls, though the swinging main sensor is the selfie tool Honor wants you to use.

To wake the arm you slide the cover by hand, then tap a launcher in the camera app or the YOYO assistant. An X-ray animation plays on the 6.31-inch screen while the mechanism unfolds. Modes on the launch list include Tilt Lock, FPV, FPV Vertical, and AI SpinShot, with subject tracking that Honor says can follow people and objects and even take voice-source cues for hands-free vlogs.

Kings Cross, Super-Steady, and Strangers’ Faces

The shooting mix is the part most phone gimbals never get right. You get a full smartphone screen for modes and exposure instead of a stick of buttons, and you can roll horizontal video while holding the phone upright. A 180-degree spin shot is the showpiece. Super-steady is the mode that matters on a commute.

In a brief London test, that super-steady pass kept footage even while the tester bounced and hopped through Kings Cross station. The miniaturized arm did not look weedy once it was moving. Tracking was the tax. The phone latched onto strangers’ faces when the tester did not want them, and it took a while to learn how the software ranked subjects. YOYO Robot Mode is still on the device, but a lot of the assistant’s tricks are China-only, which left the camera as the reason to pick the phone up.

After a week of real shooting, at least one creator in Japan was already asking whether a separate pocket camera still earned its bag space. That is the product Honor wanted. It is also the product Honor will not sell to most of the people who watched the demo reels.

A ¥9,999 Phone Against a $549 Camera

China pricing is two trims, priced at RMB 9,999 and RMB 12,999 for 12GB+512GB and 16GB+1TB. That is about $1,480 and $1,925. There is no 256GB model. Colors are Silver and Gray.

Honor’s own Magic V6 opened in China at RMB 8,999, so the Robot Phone’s entry price sits RMB 1,000 above the cheapest foldable. Match storage and the gap vanishes: Magic V6 12GB+512GB is also RMB 9,999, the same sticker as the Robot Phone’s base kit. In the UK the Magic V6 sells for £1,999.99. If this gimbal phone ever got a Western price list, it would almost certainly land higher than the China tag.

WHAT THE SAME MONEY BUYS

A current listing for the Osmo Pocket 3 Creator Combo is $549, and the camera itself weighs 179 grams. Subtract that from the Robot Phone’s $1,480 China tag and you have about $931 left, which is the entire argument for people who already own a flagship. You clip the pocket camera on, you keep your sealed daily phone, and you still have a spare body if one gadget dies. European import shops were listing the 12GB Robot Phone around €1,740 before open sales, which wipes out that math the moment you leave China.

If you need a new Honor phone and a gimbal in one receipt, the China bundle can look sane next to buying the Magic V6 and a Pocket. Most buyers are not starting from zero. They already have a phone in their pocket.

ARRI’s First Consumer LogC3 Camera Is a China Phone

On the same August 12, ARRI in Munich said Image Science was making its mobile debut, and that the Robot Phone carries a co-engineered with ARRI designation. The German firm, founded in 1917 and holding 20 Academy Scientific and Technical Awards plus six Engineering Emmys, had kept that color science inside ALEXA bodies and the software around them. Honor is the first company to put a slice of it in a phone you can pre-order on a mall app.

What ARRI actually licensed is a color and workflow pack, not a new sensor. The gimbal main camera records 10-bit ARRI LogC3 in ARRI CINEMA mode, with ARRI Wide Gamut 3 and selectable ARRI Looks that can be previewed live. Honor says the H1 chip runs noise reduction in the RAW domain, processes 14-bit 4:4:4, and outputs 10-bit LogC3 as 4:2:2, with AI noise reduction listed at 8 dB better SNR and dynamic range up to 14 stops. Launch materials put video at 4K up to 120fps, with LogC3 at 60fps, and 1080p up to 240fps. Footage is meant to drop into DaVinci Resolve with ARRI LUTs already in the chain.

Honor CEO James Li said hardware still sets the floor for image quality and that algorithms supply the leap, then argued that aesthetics, the control of light and color, are what make a frame worth keeping. ARRI’s Bermbach, speaking with Honor, put it more bluntly: the future is about control, and about giving creators better images with the tool they already carry. The catch Honor cannot rewrite is distribution. ARRI said the phone will initially be available in China and pointed every pricing question back to Honor. Honor does not sell phones through official US channels.

Why Motorized Phone Cameras Vanished After 2019

Honor is not the first company to put a motor behind a camera so one sensor could face both ways. Samsung’s 2019 Galaxy A80 slid a triple module up and flipped it for selfies, using a single motor, locking teeth, a rail, and a hook so the rotating camera on the Galaxy A80 would not spin too early. The A80 weighed 220 grams, measured 9.3mm thick, and carried a 48MP main camera. It had no IP rating. Review units rattled in the housing, collected dust on the moving panel, and in at least one case showed mechanical trouble within days.

Pop-up selfie cameras from that period disappeared for the same reasons. Sealed glass slabs won on dust, water, and two-year durability, and computational video got good enough that most people stopped asking for a motor. Honor just spent a flagship budget to bring the motor back, only now the job is cinema movement rather than hiding a notch.

FROM FLIP CAMERAS TO A FOLD-OUT ARM

1. April 10, 2019: Samsung unveils the Galaxy A80, a sliding, rotating triple camera with no dust or water rating.
2. 2019 to 2020: Pop-up and flip modules leave flagship lineups as IP68 glass slabs and punch-hole cameras take over.
3. March 2026: Honor shows the Robot Phone gimbal at MWC in Barcelona.
4. August 12, 2026: Honor and ARRI launch the phone in China, with pre-orders at 8:30 PM.
5. August 18, 2026: Open sales start at 10:08 AM, 15 days before this week.

The first durability scare on this new arm was a viral clip that treated a stall as spontaneous failure. Frame by frame, the camera is shoved against the way it wants to travel, sat on a table so the mechanism cannot complete a move, and loaded with a heavy charger on the moving module. That is abuse, and the rupee price in the same clip was wrong. It does not prove the hinge is immortal. Extra joints still add extra ways to break, which is why the old rotating phones left the market.

Splash Protection Stops When the Arm Comes Out

Honor rates the Robot Phone IP54 against dust and water, and only while the gimbal is tucked inside. Open the cover and that rating does not travel with the arm. IP54 is splash and dust, not a swim. Honor’s Magic V6, by contrast, carries IP68 and IP69 on a foldable that starts cheaper in China.

A Honor spokesperson has said the company is already looking at future devices that could launch outside China. For this one, the walls are already up.

WHERE THE ROBOT PHONE STOPS

• The map: Official sales are China only, 15 days in as of September 2, with Honor still covering a limited first run.
• The US: Honor is not in official American retail, so the first phone with ARRI LogC3 cannot be bought there through Honor.
• The assistant: YOYO Robot Mode and a lot of gesture tricks are built for China, which leaves the gimbal as the feature that travels.
• The import tax: Grey-market 12GB listings around €1,740 land near the UK Magic V6’s neighborhood without the foldable’s sealing.

Honor is still walking the phone around trade floors. This week the company’s Saudi posts put it on the LEAP 2026 stand in Riyadh, which is a demo, not a store date. Pre-orders in China opened with a gift pack (magnetic stand, lanyard, 120W charger) and lifetime YOYO SVIP on the China software. Dual nano-SIM, no memory card, MagicOS 10 on Android 16, model APH-AN00.

The Magic9 Series Gets the Color Science Next

Honor’s launch note is already hedging the mechanical bet. Technologies from the ARRI partnership, it says, will keep evolving and will be showcased in the upcoming HONOR Magic9 Series. That is the color pipeline, the Looks, the LogC3 habit, moving onto phones that do not have to hide a motor in the back. ARRI’s own release locates a joint imaging lab and a Hengdian shoot, with more work listed on sensor-level optics, capture-to-post workflows, and how images should look in an AI era.

The 2.6g motor is the piece Honor could spin out as a pocket camera of its own, a tiny gimbal that does not ask you to give up IP68 on your daily phone. Oppo and Vivo have been pushing dedicated pocket cameras for the same reason: the phone stays sealed, the gimbal stays replaceable. Honor chose the harder merge, then priced and region-locked it like a proof of concept.

Silver and Gray units are on sale in two memory sizes, and the arm in the demo reels is the same arm that drops the weather rating the moment you slide the cover. For anyone who already owns a flagship, a $549 pocket camera still does the job without asking the phone to grow joints.
