Xbox’s Exclusives Comeback Still Puts Its Biggest Games on PC

Xbox’s new exclusives, Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution, still launch day one on PC and Game Pass, complicating the pitch to buy new hardware.

Xbox says it needs console exclusives to give players a reason to buy its hardware. Its first two, Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution, will still show up on PC and Xbox Game Pass the same day they launch.

E-Day arrives October 6, 2026. Clockwork Revolution follows sometime in 2027. Neither is coming to PlayStation or Nintendo Switch, and Xbox leadership calls that the whole point of its reset. Behind that plan sits a rougher stretch: 3,200 job cuts, four studios sold off, and a definition of ‘exclusive’ that still hands the same games to anyone with a Windows laptop or a ten dollar subscription.

What Counts as a Console Exclusive Now

Before June 2026, Xbox had almost nothing left that Sony players couldn’t also buy. Of sixteen first-party games built for the Xbox Series X, only three, Halo Infinite, Forza Motorsport and Keeper, stayed off PlayStation entirely. Everything else had gone multiplatform under the strategy Xbox adopted in 2024.

Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution reverse that. Xbox has said both are permanent exclusives rather than timed ones, meaning there is no plan to eventually ship them on PS5 the way earlier games like Gears of War: Reloaded arrived on Sony’s console after debuting on Xbox.

There has to be a reason for people to buy an Xbox.

That’s Matt Booty, Xbox’s chief content officer, explaining the logic to a reason for the reversal. His argument is straightforward: exclusives reward loyal players and give newcomers a reason to spend up to $800 on hardware rather than just subscribing to a service.

The PC Exception Nobody Is Advertising

Here’s the part that matters for anyone deciding whether to spend $650 to $800 on new hardware. Xbox’s own product page for Gears of War: E-Day lists it as available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Game Pass. Buy it once, the page notes, and it plays on console and PC for no extra charge.

Industry coverage of the announcement made the same point. When Microsoft’s wording calls something an Xbox console exclusive, that phrase means it will not come to PlayStation or Nintendo hardware, not that it stays off every other screen. As one outlet covering the reveal put it, next generation Xbox is already built around the idea that the console and the PC are converging.

So the two flagship proofs of Xbox’s new exclusivity strategy are exclusive only in the sense that Sony and Nintendo owners can’t play them. Everyone with a gaming PC, a Steam library or a Game Pass subscription gets the exact same game on the exact same day. The hardware itself adds nothing that a laptop doesn’t already offer.

A Reset Paid for With 3,200 Jobs

The strategy landed in the middle of the roughest month in the most significant restructure in Xbox history. Microsoft cut 4,800 jobs company-wide on July 6, 2026, about 2.1% of its global workforce. Roughly 1,600 hit Xbox immediately, with total Xbox reductions expected to reach 3,200, or 20% of the division, by the end of fiscal 2027.

Four studios left the fold entirely as part of the same overhaul.

  • Ninja Theory – maker of the Hellblade series, spun out to new ownership
  • Undead Labs – developer of State of Decay 3, sold as part of the restructure
  • Compulsion Games – one of four studios leaving Xbox Game Studios
  • Double Fine Productions – the veteran studio also exiting Xbox’s umbrella

The four studios collectively employ around 350 people. In an internal memo, CEO Asha Sharma called the changes the biggest restructuring in Xbox’s history and said the division had been operating at profit margins three to ten times lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses, with some studios losing 64 cents for every dollar invested.

All of this landed while Microsoft shares were already having a rough year, down close to a fifth in 2026 as investors question whether the company’s AI spending is paying off fast enough. Hardware costs aren’t helping. A separate memory chip shortage is pushing the Xbox Series X’s price from $649.99 to $799.99 on August 1, 2026, a jump confirmed in Microsoft’s own pricing update for the flagship console. Xbox is asking players to pay more for a box whose marquee new games they can already get elsewhere.

Xbox Has Been Here Before

Xbox insiders told GamesRadar+ that the company doesn’t want to repeat the mistake of the Series X launch, which shipped in November 2020 without a killer exclusive to sell the machine. Five and a half years later, the results of that gap are stark.

PlayStation 5 has sold roughly 92.3 million units worldwide to the Xbox Series X and S combined total of about 34.8 million, according to hardware tracking data through May 2026. That puts PlayStation at 72.6% of current-generation console market share against Xbox’s 27.4%, and the gap widened again that month rather than closing.

Both machines launched at the same $499 price point in 2020, when Xbox’s argument was raw horsepower rather than software. That argument never translated into sales. Now Xbox is trying software as the hook instead, at a moment when its hardware costs more and its subscriber base increasingly plays somewhere other than a console.

The Next Xbox Bets Against Its Own Pitch

The contradiction gets sharper looking past this console generation. Microsoft is already deep into building its next-generation system, code-named Project Helix, and its entire premise is dissolving the line between Xbox and Windows rather than reinforcing it.

At the Game Developers Conference in March 2026, Microsoft described Project Helix as a device co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR, built around a custom AMD chip reportedly code-named Magnus. Alpha hardware ships to developers starting in 2027, with analysts now expecting a consumer launch closer to 2028 than 2027.

Ahead of that, Microsoft has already rolled Xbox’s full-screen interface, known as Xbox Mode, onto Windows 11 itself, starting in select markets in April 2026. It debuted first on the ASUS-built ROG Xbox Ally handheld. The pitch for Helix, in other words, is a machine explicitly built to play Xbox and PC games interchangeably, which sits awkwardly next to a marketing push telling players that owning Xbox hardware is what makes a game truly theirs.

Which Xbox Games Are Still Coming to PS5?

Most of Xbox’s biggest 2026 and 2027 releases remain multiplatform, and that list is longer than the two new exclusives suggest. Halo: Campaign Evolved lands on PS5 July 28, 2026, becoming the first Halo game on PlayStation in the franchise’s 25 year history. Fable, Forza Horizon 6 and the entire Call of Duty franchise stay multiplatform too.

What we know:

  • Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution are permanent Xbox and PC exclusives, with no plan to add PlayStation later
  • Halo: Campaign Evolved, Fable and Forza Horizon 6 are locked into PS5 releases already promised to partners and retailers
  • Call of Duty stays multiplatform under contracts Microsoft signed with Nintendo, PlayStation and Steam during its Activision Blizzard acquisition, running through 2033

What’s still unconfirmed:

  • The Elder Scrolls 6, still undecided between exclusive and multiplatform release according to senior Xbox officials
  • A third major exclusive beyond E-Day and Clockwork, with no word on whether it comes from Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda or Activision Blizzard
  • Marvel’s Blade, currently in consultation at Arkane Lyon over its future direction

Xbox’s chief content officer has promised more clarity going forward, saying that whenever the company sets a release date for a game, it will announce which platforms carry it at the same time. That commitment doesn’t cover the games already caught in the middle.

Whatever the theory behind exclusives turns out to be worth, October 6 is when Xbox finds out, when Gears of War: E-Day becomes the first real test of whether a game that skips PlayStation and Switch, but not PC, is enough to move new hardware off shelves.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people actually subscribe to Xbox Game Pass?

Xbox Game Pass reached about 40 million subscribers by the first quarter of 2026, up roughly 10% year over year, with the Ultimate tier that includes cloud gaming making up about 70% of that base. Xbox separately counts around 500 million monthly active users, but that figure spans console, PC and mobile, not hardware sales alone.

What is the ROG Xbox Ally, and how does it connect to Project Helix?

The ROG Xbox Ally is a Windows handheld built by ASUS that debuted in 2025 as the first device to run Xbox’s full-screen Xbox Mode interface. That same software began rolling out more broadly to Windows 11 machines in April 2026, effectively previewing the interface Microsoft plans to build into Project Helix.

Is the Xbox Series S getting more expensive too?

Yes. Alongside the Xbox Series X’s rise from $649.99 to $799.99, the entry-level Series S is set to jump from $399.99 to $499.99 on August 1, 2026, closing what had been the cheapest way into current-generation console gaming.

Why does Call of Duty always stay multiplatform no matter what Xbox decides?

Microsoft signed legally binding agreements with Nintendo, PlayStation and Steam to keep Call of Duty available on those platforms for ten years, as a condition regulators attached to its roughly $69 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard. Those deals run through 2033, regardless of Xbox’s broader exclusivity strategy.

Can I play Gears of War: E-Day before its October launch?

Microsoft is running an open multiplayer beta from August 6 to August 10, 2026, with early access for anyone who preorders the game or already subscribes to Xbox Game Pass or PC Game Pass. A second beta weekend is planned before the full release on October 6.
