GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – For many residents of Loma, the old schoolhouse is more than just a building; it’s a repository of cherished memories. Originally shut down in the 1980s, the school was later converted into an eight-bedroom home.
When the property came up for sale, it was an easy decision for a local Loma native and her husband to purchase it. The building now holds a special place in their hearts, symbolizing a deep connection to their hometown.
Structural Challenges
Despite their enthusiasm, the couple quickly encountered serious issues. The schoolhouse’s foundation began to deteriorate, and cracks in the structure became more pronounced, threatening its stability.
Shirleen Hutton, the current owner, shared their plight: “Our full intent was to keep it. But now we’re in a dilemma of it’s starting to get worse, and we’re not finding any way to keep it standing.”
Seeking Support
Efforts to secure assistance from contractors have proven costly, leaving the couple in search of alternative solutions. Hutton remains hopeful and open to suggestions—whether it be a contractor willing to offer a discounted rate or community members contributing funds or services to aid in the restoration.
