Hisense Ships Dolby Vision 2 First and the Brightness Catch

Select 2026 Hisense TVs began receiving Dolby Vision 2 Max firmware this week, the first consumer sets to unlock the new dynamic HDR engine more than ten months after its reveal. The UX, UR9, UR8 and U7 (U7 Pro in some regions) running Google TV or VIDAA OS get the full Max tier first, with the bulk of updates expected by the end of August and full coverage by the end of September.

The update improves every existing Dolby Vision title right away. New content encoded with extra metadata will unlock still more. That promise arrives with a quiet catch: the same tools that finally match today’s 3,000-nit-plus panels can also rewrite the carefully dim look of older masters.

The First Wave Lands on Four Hisense Lines

According to the Dolby and Hisense joint announcement, the firmware rolls out across North America, Europe and APAC over the coming weeks. Chris Turkstra, Dolby’s vice president of home devices, told The Verge the vast majority of the listed sets should finish by late August.

TCL and Philips plan to add support on select 2026 models later this year. LG and Sony have not announced 2026 support. Samsung continues to sit out Dolby Vision entirely in favor of its own HDR10+ path.

The staggered calendar leaves a short window where only Hisense owners see Max in the wild. That gap will close once TCL and Philips finish their own 2026 rollouts, yet the early lead still matters for shoppers deciding this summer.

Two Tiers Split the Feature Set

Dolby Vision 2 is not a single package. It splits into a mainstream tier and a Max tier reserved for the brightest, widest-gamut panels. Hisense’s first four lines all ship as Max.

Base Dolby Vision 2 targets less expensive sets that lack ambient sensors or the motion silicon needed for Authentic Motion. Max is the full kit. Both still need the MediaTek Pentonic 800 first SoC; older Dolby Vision hardware cannot be updated.

The split keeps the format reachable on midrange panels while reserving motion metadata and full ambient sensing for flagship silicon. Buyers comparing a Max set to a future base set will notice the gap mainly on Authentic Motion and Light Sense 2, not on the core tone-mapping engine both tiers share.

Bidirectional Mapping Meets 3,000-Nit Panels

When Dolby Vision launched in 2014, most masters topped out between 1,000 and 4,000 nits while consumer TVs struggled to hit even the lower end. Tone mapping squeezed the picture down. Many of today’s Mini-LED and RGB Mini-LED sets reverse the problem. The Hisense UR9 exceeds 3,000 nits; some rivals approach 9,000 nits in short bursts.

Dolby Vision 2’s engine can now map in both directions. It can still compress highlights for dimmer screens, and it can proportionally lift brightness and contrast so a bright panel uses more of its light output. Local tone mapping and an intensity slider let viewers further dial the punch.

We’ve reached an inflection point where TV technology has dramatically changed while artists continue to demand even more innovative tools.

John Couling, Dolby’s senior vice president of entertainment, said that at the original September 2025 Dolby Vision 2 unveil. The same engine that “unleashes the full capabilities of modern TVs” also gives living-room controls over how far that unleashing goes.

That is the irony. Blade Runner 2049 sits at roughly 200-250 nits average brightness even in its HDR Dolby Vision grade. The darkness is the mood. On a set that can push past 3,000 nits, the new mapping and intensity slider can make the same master feel punchier, brighter, and less like the version the filmmakers signed off on a mastering monitor. Precision Black and Light Sense 2 aim to keep artistic intent while fixing the common “too dark” complaint. Whether they fully succeed will be settled title by title once the firmware is widespread.

The intensity slider is the practical escape hatch. Viewers who want the dim theatrical grade can keep the lift modest. Viewers who want the panel to flex can push it harder. The engine supplies the range; the remote decides the mood.

Authentic Motion Puts Creators on the Remote

The most polarizing Max feature is Authentic Motion. Creators can now embed motion-smoothing intensity scene by scene, or even moment by moment, inside the Dolby Vision 2 metadata. A fast pan can get gentle interpolation to kill judder. A quiet dramatic beat can stay fully cinematic with zero soap-opera effect.

Jonas Klittmark, Dolby’s director of business and product, told The Verge the feature “perhaps more than any other needs to be driven by creatively approved decisions. We don’t want to be making anything up when it comes to the motion experience.” Viewers can still override it with the TV’s own motion settings or switch it off completely.

Existing Dolby Vision titles cannot gain Authentic Motion after the fact. Only new post-production work can add it. Until then the engine still improves tone mapping and ambient response on the library already out there.

Because the metadata travels with the title, a well-authored stream can look consistent across Max sets from different brands once those sets arrive. That consistency is the pitch. The risk is a badly authored stream that forces smoothing where a viewer never wanted it, which is why the override path stays visible.

Content Partners Start Thin

Peacock, Canal+ and iQIYI have committed to encode with Dolby Vision 2. Canal+ was the first media group to announce support at the 2025 unveil. Peacock is expected to begin with live sports (NFL, NBA, MLB) before older library titles. Other studios are updating post-production pipelines, but the volume of natively authored Dolby Vision 2 titles will stay modest for months.

Because the format simply extends existing Dolby Vision metadata, older players and TVs ignore the extra data and play the base Dolby Vision layer. New Max sets play everything. The upgrade path is clean; the content pipeline is the bottleneck.

HDR10+ Advanced, announced around the same window, offers a parallel set of brightness, local tone-mapping and motion-metadata tools. It is royalty-free and backed by Samsung, Panasonic, Hisense, TCL, Amazon Prime Video and Roku. Dolby’s licensed approach has historically won wider premium content support faster. Both formats will coexist for years.

Live sports give Peacock a practical on-ramp. Fresh events need no library remaster, so new metadata can ship with the feed. Catalog films and series move slower because each title needs a fresh pass through an updated pipeline.

Hardware Lock and the Long Tail

Only the MediaTek Pentonic 800 currently carries the silicon for Dolby Vision 2. That chip sits inside the first Hisense, TCL and Philips 2026 models. Older Dolby Vision TVs cannot receive a software update that enables the new engine. They will still display Dolby Vision 2 streams by falling back to the original metadata.

This is the same hardware-gated pattern that defined the original Dolby Vision rollout more than a decade ago. Early adopters of the new Hisense lines get the full Max experience now. Everyone else waits for 2027 silicon or later. Hisense’s early lead also reinforces its push in large-screen Mini-LED and RGB Mini-LED, a segment where it already claims global volume strength. Buyers comparing premium Mini-LED options will weigh the new firmware against other sets that lean hard on their own processing, including another Mini-LED set that leans on smart software.

Two HDR Formats Share Living Rooms

Dolby Vision 2 and HDR10+ Advanced arrived in the same broad window with overlapping tools for brightness, local tone mapping and motion metadata. The difference is business model and ecosystem shape, not the basic problem each format tries to solve.

Premium film and series support has historically moved faster on Dolby’s licensed side. The royalty-free camp answers with wider platform backing and no license friction for smaller streamers. Neither advantage erases the other overnight.

Fallback Keeps Older Sets Useful

The metadata extension design is the quiet strength of the rollout. A Dolby Vision 2 stream still carries a base Dolby Vision layer that any older Dolby Vision TV or player can read. Extra Max data is simply ignored when the silicon cannot use it.

That choice avoids a format break. Households do not need matching new hardware in every room for a title to play. The new engine lights up only where Pentonic 800 class hardware and Max-tier features exist; everywhere else the picture falls back cleanly.

The same pattern governed the original Dolby Vision launch after 2014. Early hardware carried the new tools; the long tail kept playing the compatible base. Owners of last year’s sets lose nothing at the decoder. They simply miss bidirectional lift, Authentic Motion and the richer ambient controls until they buy into the new chip generation.

What Owners Get This Month

If you already own one of the listed 2026 Hisense models, the firmware delivers a free picture upgrade on the Dolby Vision library you already watch. Intensity and ambient tools become available immediately. Authentic Motion and the richest bidirectional mapping wait for newly encoded titles.

If you are shopping, Dolby Vision 2 Max is a real differentiator on the Hisense UX and UR lines right now. It is not a reason to delay a purchase if you need a TV this week; the base format still works, and content volume will climb slowly. LG and Sony will almost certainly follow on 2027 models. Samsung will not.

The first sets are live. The engine is smarter. Whether the brightness lift and motion metadata make more films feel true to the mastering suite, or simply more like what a bright living-room panel can do, is now a question each title and each viewer will answer for themselves.
