New Independent Bookstore Brings Literary Charm to Northeast Indiana

A new independent bookstore is making its mark in northeast Indiana, offering romance novel enthusiasts and book lovers a fresh place to gather, explore, and connect.

Slow Burn Books: A Passion Project Comes to Life

Slow Burn Books, an independent bookstore owned by Hannah Ziko, is preparing for its grand opening in Garrett, Indiana, on March 8. Ziko, a Fort Wayne native, has long envisioned a space that is more than just a bookstore—she wants it to be a literary hub for the local community.

“I love the small-town vibes,” Ziko said. “I wanted to bring my entrepreneurship here and create a space where readers can come together.”

The store will focus primarily on romance novels, with a rotating selection each week. But beyond that, it aims to be a meeting place for book clubs, author events, and networking opportunities for small businesses in the region.

A Bookstore With Community at Its Heart

Independent bookstores have faced a tough road in recent years, struggling to compete with online retailers and big-box stores. Yet, Slow Burn Books is setting out to prove there is still a place for local, community-driven shops.

  • The store will host regular book clubs catering to various romance subgenres.
  • Readings and literary events will bring authors and readers together for intimate discussions.
  • Small businesses will have opportunities to partner with the store for networking events and collaborations.

“We want this to be a space where people can share their love of books and connect with others who have similar interests,” Ziko said.

Romance Novels Take Center Stage

Slow Burn Books will specialize in romance literature, offering a carefully curated selection that changes weekly. From contemporary love stories to historical romances, Ziko wants to ensure there is something for every kind of romance reader.

She also plans to feature indie authors and lesser-known titles alongside bestsellers, giving readers a chance to discover hidden gems. The store will also carry a small selection of book-related gifts, stationery, and locally crafted items to support other small businesses in the area.

A Welcome Addition to Garrett’s Business Scene

Garrett’s small business community has been steadily growing, and the arrival of Slow Burn Books adds a unique new element. Local business owners have already expressed excitement about the store’s potential to bring more foot traffic and cultural engagement to the area.

A report from the American Booksellers Association notes that while independent bookstores saw a decline in the early 2000s, recent years have shown a resurgence in community-focused shops that offer curated experiences and personal touches that large retailers lack.

As the countdown to March 8 begins, Ziko encourages readers and small business supporters to visit the store and experience what Slow Burn Books has to offer. The opening day promises a warm welcome to book lovers and a new chapter for Garrett’s literary scene.
