The Special Olympics Colorado made a triumphant return to Sunlight Mountain Resort in Glenwood Springs over the weekend, bringing together athletes from across the western slope of Colorado. This year marks another successful chapter in the long-standing tradition of hosting the Special Olympics for the western region of the state since 1989.
Weekend of Competition: Alpine and Nordic Events
The weekend kicked off on Friday with the alpine or downhill events, where athletes showcased their skills on the slopes. Spectators were treated to impressive performances as athletes demonstrated their strength, skill, and perseverance.
Saturday followed with the Nordic or cross-country events, another highlight of the competition. These events tested athletes’ endurance and stamina, with participants pushing their limits and competing for personal bests and team victories.
Throughout the weekend, the atmosphere at Sunlight Mountain Resort was electric, as athletes, coaches, and families gathered to support one another. The event was a true celebration of sportsmanship and community, underscoring the power of sport to bring people together.
Garfield County Sheriff’s Office Joins the Celebration
The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office played a key role in supporting the athletes during the competition, though not in the way one might expect. Instead of competing, members of the Sheriff’s Office were on hand to cheer on the athletes, distribute awards, and hand out swag and high fives. Their presence was a reminder of the community support that surrounds the Special Olympics, with everyone coming together to celebrate the incredible achievements of the athletes.
In total, the event saw 110 athletes, along with their coaches and family members, gather in Glenwood Springs to take part in the competition. The weekend was not just about winning, but about celebrating the spirit of inclusion, perseverance, and camaraderie that defines the Special Olympics.
Looking Ahead: Special Olympics Summer Games
While this winter event was a highlight for the western slope, there’s more to come for the athletes of Colorado. The Special Olympics Summer Games will be held at Colorado Mesa University (CMU) in early June. Athletes will once again have the opportunity to showcase their talents, with a focus on outdoor and track events that celebrate the diverse skill sets of the competitors.
The return of Special Olympics Colorado to Sunlight Mountain Resort was another successful chapter in a long history of promoting inclusion and community. The athletes’ determination and the support they received made it a weekend to remember, leaving everyone eagerly anticipating the Summer Games ahead.
