Local DAR Chapter Celebrates America’s 250th Birthday with Ceremony

Fort Wayne, Indiana – The Mary Penrose Wayne Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) marked a significant milestone in the nation’s history with a special ceremony dedicated to celebrating America’s 250th birthday on Saturday, November 16, 2024.

A Ceremony to Honor America’s Independence

The event, held at Guldlin Park, began at 2 p.m. with the dedication of a commemorative marker to honor America’s independence and the people who made it possible. The marker was placed as a reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of the men and women who fought for American freedom during the Revolutionary War.

During the ceremony, Fort Wayne Mayor Sharon Tucker proclaimed November 16th as “America 250th Revolutionary War Patriot Recognition Day”. The ceremony was attended by over 175 members of the Mary Penrose Wayne Chapter, who are part of the DAR, a women’s service organization with a lineage traced back to individuals who contributed to securing American independence.

  • Presentation of the Color Guard: A ceremonial display of military tradition was presented.

A Day for Reflection

“We are recognizing and dedicating this marker to commemorate the bravery of the men and women who achieved American Independence from 1775-1783,” said Benita Steyer, a member of the Mary Penrose Wayne Chapter. “When we see this marker, we as Hoosiers can reflect positively on Indiana’s and America’s history.”

The celebration is part of a national initiative to commemorate America’s 250th Anniversary, and it reflects the DAR’s ongoing mission to preserve and honor the history of American independence.
