Archer and Anduril’s Thunder VTOL Bets It Can Beat the V-22’s History
Archer and Anduril’s Thunder VTOL chases the tiltrotor promise that cost the V-22 program $55.7 billion and 26 years to prove.
Anduril Industries and Archer Aviation rolled out Thunder on Monday, a hybrid-electric tiltrotor aircraft built to fly combat missions and commercial routes off the same basic airframe. The unveiling happened at the Farnborough Airshow in England, where the defense variant drew the crowds while a civilian version waits for its own announcement later this week.
Thunder will not fly for the first time until 2027. But Archer and Anduril are already betting the aircraft can do in a couple of years what the Pentagon’s last major tiltrotor program needed a quarter century and tens of billions of dollars to finish.
A Clean-Sheet Attack Rotorcraft Built for Two Markets
Anduril showed off Thunder as a Group 5 autonomous attack rotorcraft, the Pentagon’s classification for its largest and most capable uncrewed aircraft. The pitch is a pilotless wingman rather than a replacement for existing gunships: Thunder is meant to fly fast and low in formation with crewed rotorcraft like the AH-64 Apache and the Army’s new MV-75 Cheyenne II, hunting targets while keeping human crews farther from danger.
A series hybrid-electric powertrain gives the airframe its range and endurance. Dual tiltrotors vary rotor speed depending on flight mode, cutting power demand and fuel burn during cruise and quieting the aircraft during low-altitude approach, according to the companies’ joint announcement. The airframe is built to carry modular, heavy payloads, letting one design get reconfigured for surveillance, strike or cargo work instead of requiring a new aircraft for each mission.
“From raw performance to producibility, harnessing the best technologies from the commercial eVTOL market for defense is how Thunder will deliver operational value to our customers,” said Shane Arnott, Anduril’s senior vice president of maneuver dominance. He called the design “a step change in capability.”
We couldn’t simply tweak our existing aircraft. Instead, we took a bold first principles approach alongside Anduril to develop what we believe is the most sophisticated vertical lift aircraft ever made.
Adam Goldstein, Archer’s founder and chief executive, said the two companies needed a blank sheet of paper rather than a modified version of Archer’s existing air taxi work to hit the performance defense customers wanted.
Archer Didn’t Start From Zero
Thunder’s tiltrotors did not begin as a blank page, either. In December 2025, Archer signed an exclusive deal with Karem Aircraft, a privately held firm in Lake Forest, California, founded by Abe Karem, an engineer credited with pioneering work behind the modern armed drone. The agreement gave Archer exclusive access to Army-validated rotor technology built around Karem’s patented Optimum Speed Rotor design.
“Karem’s military-grade rotor systems are among the most advanced Army-validated technologies in the world,” Goldstein said when that deal was announced. “Integrating them into our next-gen hybrid VTOL platform positions Archer to move faster and deliver capabilities that legacy systems simply can’t match.”
Archer arrived at Thunder with more than one inherited advantage:
- Karem’s Optimum Speed Rotor – tiltrotor hardware already validated against Army standards, skipping years of first-principles rotor testing.
- Patents from Overair and Lilium – eVTOL technology Archer acquired outright instead of engineering from scratch.
- Completed surrogate flight tests – full-scale stand-in aircraft have already flown to prove out systems Thunder depends on, according to Anduril and Archer.
That inheritance does not guarantee Thunder flies on schedule. It does mean Archer isn’t starting the clock at zero, which is exactly where the Pentagon’s last major tiltrotor program began.
The V-22 Casts a Long, Costly Shadow
That program was the V-22 Osprey, a joint Bell Helicopter and Boeing project the Pentagon started in December 1981 to replace aging Marine Corps CH-46 helicopters. The tiltrotor concept was new enough that reaching a working prototype took most of the decade, and years more passed before the aircraft could reliably fly like an airplane instead of a helicopter.
- 1981: The V-22 program begins as a joint Bell Helicopter and Boeing project to replace the Marine Corps’ aging helicopter fleet.
- 1989: The first Osprey prototype flies in helicopter mode; full forward flight follows about six months later.

- 2019: The Pentagon estimates the program’s total acquisition cost at $55.7 billion.
- 2024: The entire Osprey fleet is grounded again after a near-crash at Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico.
As of last July, 65 military personnel had died in V-22 mishaps since the program began, according to a congressional research report on the aircraft that also details an estimated $55.7 billion total acquisition cost covering 360 aircraft for the Marines plus dozens more for the Air Force and Navy.
Thunder is a fraction of the Osprey’s size and runs on an entirely different propulsion architecture, hybrid-electric instead of twin turboshaft engines. But it is chasing the same basic promise the V-22 chased in 1981: an aircraft that takes off like a helicopter and flies like a plane. Archer and Anduril are betting that years of commercial eVTOL flight testing, plus Karem’s already-validated rotor hardware, can close in roughly two years what the V-22 program needed more than two decades to prove.
Joby and L3Harris Are Racing the Same Problem
Archer and Anduril are not the only pair chasing this market. Joby Aviation, Archer’s chief rival in civilian air taxis, teamed up with L3Harris Technologies, a defense contractor, to build its own military variant of Joby’s S4 aircraft. That program runs on a gas-turbine hybrid powertrain rather than Thunder’s fully electric hybrid system, and it targets crewed-uncrewed teaming instead of Thunder’s autonomous attack role.

Joby already has a longer paper trail with the Pentagon. Its Air Force contract under the Agility Prime program, expanded multiple times since 2020, is worth up to $131 million and has already put Joby aircraft at Edwards Air Force Base. Anduril brings a different kind of track record. It edged out both Boeing and Lockheed Martin for a collaborative combat aircraft production contract earlier this year, evidence that the primes’ hold on next-generation military aircraft work is no longer automatic.
Why Does Archer Need a Second Business Line?
Archer’s civilian air taxi business still depends on Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification and city-by-city infrastructure that has moved slower than the industry once promised. Defense contracts pay differently. Government money tends to arrive earlier and in bigger checks, and it does not wait on a passenger-carrying certificate. Thunder gives Archer a second, faster-paying customer while its civilian certification work continues in parallel.
Archer shares traded around $5.28 apiece this week, down $0.03, or about 0.56%, even as the company unveiled what its executives call the most sophisticated vertical lift aircraft they have built. Wall Street has been watching Archer’s broader shift toward military aircraft work for months, alongside a wave of capital moving into dual-use aviation more generally. European drone maker Helsing, for one, recently pushed its own valuation past 18 billion dollars on similar logic: sell commercial engineering speed into defense budgets that move faster than commercial regulators do.
The FAA, meanwhile, has already cleared eVTOL test flights in 26 states, a regulatory opening that keeps Archer’s civilian ambitions alive even as Thunder pulls engineering attention toward the Pentagon. Archer says it will name Thunder’s first commercial customers before the week is out, the clearest sign yet that the civilian half of the platform is not an afterthought.
