FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A holiday miracle has transformed the lives of Ron and Judy Marley, a local veteran and his wife, who lost nearly everything in a devastating house fire earlier this year. Thanks to an outpouring of community support following a news story, the Marleys are now on the cusp of celebrating Christmas in a fully furnished home.
A Year of Struggles
In January, a massive fire destroyed the Marleys’ home, leaving them displaced and without most of their belongings. Since then, Ron, a veteran, and his wife Judy have been navigating the challenges of rebuilding their lives.
“Shepherd’s House has witnessed miracles since 1998, but this—this is unprecedented,” said Barb Cox, Executive Director of Shepherd’s House, the nonprofit supporting the couple.
A Community Rallies
After their story aired on 21Alive News, the response was immediate and overwhelming.
“The phone started ringing nonstop after the broadcast. People wanted to help however they could,” shared Cox.
Within hours, community members donated enough furniture, including couches, chairs, and tables, to completely furnish the Marleys’ new home. Two local construction crews also volunteered to clean and restore their property.
“I’m now down to just needing blinds for the house,” said Cox.
Renewed Hope
The Marleys, especially Ron, have undergone a remarkable transformation.
“He could barely speak or stand; he was completely broken down and hopeless,” Cox recounted. “But after the community stepped in, he sounds like a completely different person. This hope has truly changed his life.”
Celebrating Christmas at Home
With the finishing touches nearly complete, the Marleys are expected to move into their new home just in time for the holidays.
“You turned his world around,” Cox remarked. “I believe this has literally saved his life.”
Continuing Support
The Shepherd’s House is still accepting donations to help the Marleys settle into their new home. The organization is particularly looking for small items, including Christmas decorations, to make the season extra special.
